Detention (2020) on Netflix

Episodes 1 through 8

This is a Taiwanese film with English subtitles. I linked the Wikipedia page in the film title instead of using IMDB.

I read this series starts out slow and picks up in the middle. That's true. The review was written like that was a bad thing. I would say it is like a book that has a slow build to a climax and has a proper denouement (I learned that word in high school English class).

I enjoyed it. It has a different feel than Korean series and films.

The series is based on a game by the same name.
Detention (2017) available through Steam

It was delightful because watching the series. The sets and the actors resembled characters from the game. There were several moment where I had deja vu. It was good adaption of a game to film.
(note: I've never finished the game. One must find clues to solve the mystery, and I'm not that good at that. I still like it though.)

There is a film as well made in 2019. I would like to find it.
Minutes later: I found the film on Tubi TV

Ashes To Ashes

First three episodes of Series 1 from 2008. This is the follow-up to 'Life On Mars' from a few years earlier. A woman living in the first decade of the 21st Century is catapulted back in time to 1981, where she for some reason finds herself as a Detective Inspector in the Metropolitan Police.

It's all a bit far-fetched, contrived and over-complicated, not to mention politically correct as it tries a little too hard to convince the viewer of the supposed superiority of our heroine's 'progressive' outlook vis a vis the attitudes she is surrounded by. Reasonably interesting all the same, and Keeley Hawes is quite attractive if you like that sort of thing.

It's not bad - I'll definitely watch the rest of the Series 1 boxset. Not a great fan of the occasional crudity and bad language, but the early 1980s music is definitely a plus point!

Bowie's character at 2:02 is featured quite a lot in these episodes.

LOL, and take a look at the slightly cruel parody of this at 1:37 here...

Gene Hunt thinks he's the sheriff in a western. I love him

Seasons 1-3 of Upload on Prime

A comedy set slightly in the future where you can upload your consciousness to a virtual afterlife if you think you’re dying. It’s a lighthearted affair with some genuinely funny moments.

Yesterday (11/21/2023) and this morning I watched Detention from 2020 again. It is the Taiwan series on Netflix that was based on the movie by the same name from 2019 that was based on the video game by the same name from 2017.

I enjoyed this series after the first viewing. I enjoyed it more the second time because I wasn't trying to figure out what was going on. There are scenes that take place in the past as memories that are intermingled with the present.

There is also a final scene after the credits. It's not a Marvel comics type scene where you say "Oh my god. The Green Goblin is coming back, and he's not even from this universe! What's that going to mean? (mind blown)" This end scene wraps up a couple loose ends. So if you watch the series, watch it through the end of the credits for the last episode.

The series is about a thirty year old school girl's spirit seeking revenge, gaining the trust of a young school girl with a type of brain anomaly (she sees and hears things) to enact that revenge. She takes medication to control her hallucinations. Remember, she sees this spirit. It is also about parents, their imperfections, and their children. It is also about forgiving oneself for mistakes, some deadly, from the past. It is also a tiny little romance. At the very end, it about the students of today being the future, and not the past of the adults. (There's a social cycle that bears remembering.) That part is maybe a little simplistic, but it is a commentary on Taiwan. One could say it is a metaphor for Taiwan, moving on from the government's mistakes from the past. Germany might understand, and someday the US might understand as well. Okay, it a story about hope, as nothing to do with vengeful spirit possession. (Now I've gotten cared away. it is definitely about spirit possession.)

I could probably watch the movie again, but I think the series has more depth and complexity, for me at least. i could be reading into it too much.
