Another thread about whether or not Sheldon has AS...how original.

...

......

Quote:
Sheldon: Was that sarcasm?
Penny: Yes, Sheldon.
Sheldon: I am on a roll.

Disclaimer: May not be actual quote. My memory is not eidetic. Close, but no cigar.

I think he does, but the writers probably based it off their memories and imaginings of many people, so perhaps someone with AS crossed their path and left an impression, even if they didn't consciously intend Sheldon to be on the spectrum. Sheldon also has traits of OCD. He has more traits of it (ASD; sorry about forgetting that antecedent confusion) than I do, and I'm a nerdy physics student professionally diagnosed as a kid. He acts a lot like I did when I was 13 (I'm now in my twenties), and even then I got sarcasm. And no, I'm nowhere near that arrogant these days. But some very ignorant/illogical professors bring out that mean arrogant streak every so often, and it's extremely difficult to contain.

I think Sheldon is definitely intended to be somewhere on the spectrum. The actor who plays Sheldon, and a writer on the show, once said that they read a book about aspergers syndrome and used it as the basis for the character. i think that he is, but that's just my opinion and everyone is welcome to their own interpretation.

I definitely do enjoy this show a lot more, being able to relate to at least one of it's characters ^_^

I do believe he's an Aspie. But the producers deny it in case someone gets offended. I think Sheldon is adorable, however. So good hearted in the inside... and innocent, like a child! :)

I agree, I think his part is based on aspie traits, slightly exaggerated and a bit camp perhaps, though his has great eye contact skills. He is like the caricature of an aspie and I agree that the producers are denying it in case someone gets offended. I think he is highly entertaining too.

I think some people are confused.

The actor that plays Sheldon does not have anything, he is just an actor.
The role that Sheldon plays - most definitely some profound form of Aspie.
What you have to realize is that he is a functioning adult, only because his intelligence is so high that they will not fire him because he doesn't really break any of the rules bad enough to get fired on a permanent basis.
If you ever attended college - you would understand the term Tenure.
Tenure is basically a point in time where the University hires you and you cannot be fired.

Even Jerry Sandusky enjoyed the benefits of tenure, they supplied him with a office on campus long after his years of service with the university was over.

In real life, Sheldon would have no friends because no one would tolerate him.
The room mate is the person that the people are attracted to and the neighbor girl is the only reason why the room mate doesn't move away.

Narcissism more than anything I think. Narcissism and apathy for others.

Sheldon is a parody. The whole Big Bang Theory 'formula' is a stereotypical NT idea of what nerds are about. Some nerds are on the AS, either diagnosed or undiagnosed. It's a sliding scale. I've been diagnosed and I'm the most sarcastic person I know. Some people I know with ASD I do have to explain things to, just as Leonard etc have to with Sheldon.
This is not to say that I don't like or don't watch the show. I do and I enjoy it, but at times it does feel like it's poking fun at people I know. I really prefer how something like Psych handles the same subject.

Yeah the more I watch the more I think he is an Aspie, or at least he is def on the spectrum. Also obviously he is asexual. Plus some sort of sensory processing disorder. And maybe something else?

THAT IS SO NOT TRUE! I am always told I am like Sheldon, but I have friends. And it's not just me. Loads of Aspies and OCD sufferers have friends!! !! !
