Guillermo del Toro, the writer/director of "Hellboy", "Pan's Labrynith",
and the upcoming "Hellboy 2" may be given the reigns to direct the last movie
in the series, "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows."

What do you think about this?

PS: "Hellboy 2" is set for release on July 11th from Universal Pictures.

Man that guy is popular at the moment! He's also supposed to be directing both Hobbit films for Peter Jackson.

I think it might be cool. As with the new Star Trek film, there's no way to judge until we see the finished product.

When you said HP, I thought you meant Lovecraft. That would be even more appropriate, given the nature of Hellboy. Is he the one who was trying to get "In The Mountains Of Madness" onto the big screen?

And yeah, I think he'd be an improvement for the Harry Potter series. Haven't read any of the books though, so that's an uneducated guess.

It's just a rumor, I wouldn't buy it. He's got too many other films on his schedule as it is. If it was true it'd be pretty cool though.

Yes. There will be "The Hobbit" and possibly, GDT may direct "The Silmarillion"
for Peter Jackson, if the second Hobbit movie is "The Silmarillion."

Both movies will cost around $150 million each for New Line Cinema and MGM.

I haven't heard anything about the second movie being The Silmarillion. Frankly, I think Sil is unfilmable, although it might be possible to make a movie from one or two of the stories in it.

What I have heard is that the second film may bridge the decades between The Hobbit and LOTR. Or they might just split The Hobbit into two movies. Neither of which sound like very good ideas to me.

Yeah, it wasn't confirmed as the Sil, exactly. It was just said to be a bridge between Hobbit and LotR, since there is so much information about what happened inbetween them.

Also, The Hobbit movie may not happen after all
because New Line Cinema is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

New Line is being sued by Tolkien's estate for unpaid royalties.

The second Hobbit movie is rumoured to be a "narrative bridge" between The Hobbit and LOTR.

As for Peter Jackson, I wasn't very fond of his directing style. Do not forget, the artistic look of the movie was largely due to artists such as Alan Lee. Jackson's horror roots show too many times and detract from the picture.

Is anything set for sure that Del Toro will direct something by Lovecraft (At The Mountains of Madness?)?

The latest I've read is that he's still trying to get studios interested but nobody will give him the R rating that he insists upon. I think he should stop wasting his time and do what John Carpenter did with In the Mouth of Madness and make his own Lovecraft inspired movie without basing it on a specific story. The Coen brothers also did this when they couldn't get the rights to Dashiell Hammett's books. They wrote their own Hammett story and made the movie without the rights. And the result, Miller's Crossing, is the most purely Hammett movie ever made, despite not being officially based on his writing. All that Del Toro needs to do is make a Lovecraft movie that's different enough to avoid being sued. But I guess he's so hung up on that specific story that he can't be swayed. Oh well.
