I agree, at first I thought it was about a man going through a mid life crisis, however after a second viewing, I realized it was a masterpiece which explores the hypocrisy of middle class morality and naivety of the American Dream.
I watched it for the first time in 2010. And I liiiiked it.
The film is very witty. It deals with topics that people don't like to see, while they are everywhere. The film goes beneath the surface. At the same time, it is a very aesthetic film. The soundtrack is great. And I think all of the actors were excellent choices.
I also love the reality of the film. Things like that DO happen, but instead most films talk about American white middle-class families that are flawless and perfect. Here, this doesn't happen.
