It's pretty much the same here -- usually the churches take up collections to help people out.

One of the favorite events of the year around here is a barbecue rib cookoff on a friend's ranch with an auction in the evening. It is always held to benefit a handful of local people who are facing serious financial problems -- usually, I think, as a result of cancer or other medical conditions.

It would have been awful being a girl 80 years ago,not much you could do for birth control.
I had c-sections for both my kids,I guess the babies and I could have died back then.
And you had to wear dresses,skirts,girdles,panty hose,slips,ugh.
