Firefly (Joss Whedon's short-lived TV series), after I watched most of the episodes via Amazon Instant Video, has become one of my new special interests, so much so that I am already in the process of reading 2 fanfics of it at once. I saw the first episode, "Serenity", and fell in love with it. I like the concept of the controlling and secretive "Alliance" and the criminal, liberty-over-life types at the edge of civilisation. My favourite character is River Tam as I can very much empathise with her (does anyone else think that sometimes River's behaviour can at times seem a lot like sensory or emotional overload in autistic people?)
So, any other Firefly fans here?
... you can't take the sky from me...

Total addict here, may whoever at fox who is responsible for dropping it after 1 season be sent as indentured labour to the worst fronter world in the system.

Or attacked by Reavers

Ever notice the similarities between Firefly and Dune (only the first novel)? I mean, in an authoritarian, regressive society, certain institutions perform unethical experiments in order to create a super-being. The result, a traumatised psychic human computer, escapes into a desert frontier with the help of a close relative of theirs, falling in with elements that the government cannot control. They turn out to be very, very dangerous indeed...
The Alliance is the Imperium; the Bene Gesserit are Blue Sun; Arrakis is the Frontier Worlds; the Fremen are the Browncoats; the Harkonnens are the Reavers; Jessica is Simon; Stilgar is Mal; and, of course, Paul is River.

The premise is pretty obvious: Further adventures of Han Solo, with a bigger ship and more crew. (Mal even wears a vest sometimes.) And some of the plots were clichéfests, 'The Train Job' really had me grumbling. But I fell in love with the characters and the witty dialogue.

There's so much utter garbage on TV. In a just world ... ah well, no point dwelling on it. :(

Ah yes, probably the best of the many short lived TV series which I fell in love with before they were unceremoniously axed.

Have you seen the movie Serenity yet? You may have seen and enjoyed it before ever seeing the series, as Joss does a pretty good job immersing even newbies into his universe.

Just finished watching the series. I don't understand why it was cancalled like that. It was left incomplete and I would like to have known more. I watched the movie, too.

It was the genre mixing that killed the show. I remember seeing so many people whinging about it on the show's message board back during it's brief run.

They simply would not accept the mixture of advanced and primitive societies and the western style elements. They all wanted it to be just like Star Trek or Star Wars.

I haven't watched any series on Fox that came out after that because I don't want to get hooked on one only to have it go the way of Firefly & many other Fox series that were canceled before the whole season had even aired. With all that goes into creating a single episode of a show, let alone getting a new series off the ground; Where is the logic in canceling a new series before all the episodes have even aired :?: Fox is f#cking retorted.

Posted this elsewhere on the net recently:

Fox!
The station called fox!
They robbed from the poor and they gave to the rich.
Their best shows are the ones that they always ditch.
Its easy to see, why they?re the ones Greoning mocks,
The villian of television, the station called Fox!
Now Fox saw Whedon?s back was breakin'.
He saw Whedon lament.
And they saw that writer takin'
Every minute and leavin' five memories.
So they said, "You can't do that to our viewers!"
"You Can't, crush their love of our other shows."
Fox pulled down their ads,
And in five seconds flat,
Erased all proof Whedon had of his brilliance.
They robbed from the poor and they gave to the rich.
Their best shows are the ones that they always ditch.
Its easy to see, why they?re the ones Greoning mocks,
The villian of television, the station called Fox!.
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I.
The man they call Whedon,
He took back what?s good,
And let that brilliance hit Hollywood.
He dropped it onto our theatres.
He dropped it into our living rooms.
The man called Whedon
Returned to writing
And didn?t let Fox take the sky from him.
Here we go!
They robbed from the poor and they gave to the rich.
Their best shows are the ones that they always ditch.
Its easy to see, why they?re the ones Greoning mocks,
The villian of television, the station called Fox!.

Firefly is a great show! My favorite is Zoe, I wish I was strong like her. I like her loyalty and how she has to exist on this tiny patch of area- she has to balance being a wife, her own person, a woman, a POC, second in command, a friend.... I can relate to that.

I watched the movie once and won't watch it again. Wash... :(

I'm a huge fan of Firefly, and pretty much all other Joss Whedon productions.
Firefly could have been his masterpiece, had it not been canceled.
It had such a strong concept, and great characters.

Not really a fan.

But I sympathize with its cancelling. FOX killed mah favorite show too, Crusade (B5 spinoff).

My boyfriend got me the graphic novels for my birthday :D I'm going to watch the series again, then read them, then watch the movie. LOVE Firefly, and love Joss Whedon.

It wasn't the genre mixing that killed the show. It wasn't the show at all.
The fox execs aired the episodes out of order and changed the air dates without telling anyone so that their viewership tanked like a rock, so they could cancel it. I've seen them do it with other shows, too (like the Finder). If I see a show that looks like I'd like it, but it's being aired on Fox, I know they'll cancel it. I haven't been wrong yet. Dirty backhanded lying thieving scum. The Reavers would be too quick for them.

The opening sequence and theme was great, too.

If it had ran longer, it would have been my favorite show of all time. So much potential.
