As a film I liked it. having no knowledge of the video game I can't compare.

Similar here with Ready Player One. I enjoyed the film but I have no idea about the book.

Then I watched the 1982 film (which is rightly considered a horror masterpiece) and: 8O

The 2011 film is a prequel for the earlier 1982 film but, besides having been filmed almost three decades later, it was also done completely independently of the 1982 production. And, despite the films having been produced independently and three decades apart, the 2011 film is a magnificent prequel for the 1982 film. The transition from the 2011 film to the 1982 film is seamless and they are consistent on many, many details.

And I realized the things I wasn't too crazy about in the 2011 film had to be that way to match the 1982 film.

My opinion of the 2011 film went way up when I had that realization. It might only be a pretty good horror film but the 2011 film is an outstandingly excellent masterwork in how well it matches the 1982 film.

Funny, I thought I'd replied to you! But anyway, I think often it's best not to have expectations about films because of the game or book beforehand.
