The Shop Around the Corner (Jimmy Stewart & Margaret Sullavan, 1940).

Meh.

I saw a documentary about Maria Callas.

Pretty "meh" as well.

WrongPlanet, to its credit, taught me the word "meh."

Today's film of the day will be The Bishop's Wife. I love it! Definitely not meh!

(Cary Grant, 1947).

I like many of the "pre-code" films from the early 1930s. They were quite progressive for their time. They sought to tackle real issues.

You should see Penny Serenade. It's one of my all-time favourites, and it has a Christmas theme too.
(Cary Grant & Irene Dunne, 1941).

It's very romantic and a major tear-jerker. It's on my list later this week. It's based on the flashbacks that are inspired by a set of phonograph records.

I have a little trouble with "Christmas themes" at times. But I'm getting better.

One of my favorites is "My Fair Lady." Which, of course, is an adaptation of "Pygmalion."

I like My Fair Lady too. I like the song "On the Street Where You Live". I bet you love the linguistic component.

Penny Serenade isn't Christmassy until the end.

I don't normally like newer movies but Bohemian Rhapsody was pretty great in my opinion! I think I found me a new favorite movie. :D

What is your opinion of Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury?

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Maybe I wasn't in a good mood, but I found it kind of boring.
Didn't seem nearly as entertaining as the first installment.

I thought his performance was really good. :) I know this movie messed up some of the historic facts (just like every movie done in this style) but my mom who is a big fan of both Queen and Freddie Mercury said that she thought the movie did a pretty good job focusing on what Freddie Mercury's life was like. The only thing she had to complain about was the fact that the movie never once mentioned the fact that Freddie Mercury and Princess Diana were really good friends in real life

the whole movie to me is not just about AI becoming smart enough to fool humans. For me it was a movie about the purpose of being alive. You have a genius creator who clearly has deep social issues and confines himself to the company (also sexually) of his robots. He's obviously not satisfied but does so in an attempt to share himself and giving himself purpose : the quote "what imperative does a gray box have to interact with another gray box?". This refers to why he chose to give ava sexuality and the ability to "fall in love" (or whatever). Supposedly, the sexual/ intimate imperative is the glue that keeps otherwise mechanical objects interacting with each other making things "interesting" or simply giving a purpose to the great void. The movie is essentially looking at these interactions and whether they can apply to machines. The fact that ava decides to ultimately kills Caleb shows she felt more kinship towards the other AI and recognised her own status as an AI, not a human. Her actions are based on logic and she's not driven by a desire to procreate and be social as humans are. She gives this away when she says that her ambition is to go outside and see the world/ crossing. she's driven mostly by curiosity and a desire to free herself from what she perceives as an abusive condition (prisoner). She has self awareness and motivation all the way through. Also, her only experience of humans is that of a capturor so she may very well see Caleb in those terms (notice how she traps the human), or be fearful.
Also Ava is logically driven by a desire to survive. That is the real test, perhaps, to verify that she does indeed have self awareness.

I agree. I loved the subversive way the Code era writers got some innuendo into their films
