It was definitely more for the adolescent crowd, but it took me by surprise.

If you do see it yourself, brace yourself for a scene that will remind you of
the infamous "birthing scene" from Alien.

A Vigilante: an unexpected powerful performance by Olivia Wilde. Solid movie.

Peppermint: a satisfying Hollywood tale of vengeance with Jennifer Garner dispatching the bad guys.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. That's my favourite one.

I concur and am looking forward to seeing Ewan McGregor as the adult Danny Torrance in the sequel
to The Shining which will be in theaters this November!

Crescendo (1970)

An eye-catching early appearance by Stefanie Powers here.

Hammer were best known for their very commercially-orientated horror films, but from the early 1960s to the early 70s, they produced a dozen or so releases that have been described as 'suspense thrillers', 'psychological thrillers' or even 'mini-Hitchcocks'. These are far less known about, and were undoubtedly aimed at a more sophisticated, up-market audience.

Anyway, this is one such example, and like quite a few others in the series, it seems to be inspired by the classic mid-50s French thriller Diabolique. It also takes advantage of the liberalization of the censorship rules in the UK circa 1969-70 to include one or two 'erotic' scenes, though it's debatable whether they were necessary or improved the film. Some pretty over the top acting here, especially from Jane Lapotaire as the maid Lilliane, and the music score is often a bit overpowering too.

This film has been very difficult to get hold of over the past decade and a half, and I ended up buying the ripoff 'Warner Archive Collection' version a few years ago. I've just noticed that it's now on YouTube (with excellent picture quality), and if you're at all interested in checking it out, you should do so quickly (or download it), as I suspect it could soon be taken down for copyright reasons.
