This Halloween, I want to watch some horror movies based on a classic subject matter, the haunted house.
List more than just well known popular haunted house movies. Also list some not so well known underrated films too.
And just to expand, it doesn't have to be a house. It can be an apartment, a hotel room, or any abandoned building as long as it is haunted.

The Others: Haunted House in Europe during World War 2. A Catholic mother hires new servants to help with taking care of her photosensitive children while her husband is off fighting in the war and she starts to believe her house is haunted by ghosts.

The Shining: Haunted Hotel up in the Colorodo Mountains. A family staying there as Winter Caretakers are driven crazy by the ghosts.

Ju-On and Ju-On 2: A Japanese horror movie about a haunted house in the Tokyo suburbs where a family was brutally murdred and all who enter the house fall under an evil curse.

Just to go on the expanded part, Last Shift, is a movie that is set in the haunted building of a police station, and I think can get pretty creepy.

1408 is a hotel room that no one has been able to spend the night in, I think was a little bit missed, and it is psychological. The end of the trailer does show a bit too much.

The Babadook is more on the psychological side, but I think does something a little interesting in the haunted house or haunted person theme.

And there are the The Conjuring movies, although some may fit particular taste, such as some who don't consider the first Anabelle movie very good, but I think that it has its moments.

The original "The Haunting" from 1963 is arguably the best ghost movie ever made.

The original House on Haunted Hill starring Vincent Prince is good in a campy kind of way.

The original Carnival of Souls has a haunted carnival and a woman with a near-death experience.

The Cabin in the Woods. It has so many unexpected twist and turns that you never know what is going to happen next.

The Skeleton Key is about an old haunted plantation in New Orleans and it deals with Hoodoo and has a twist ending.

I used to love this movie, until I went on vacation in New Orleans and the tour guide explained that true practioners Hoodoo find that movie stupid and offensive.

Kind of like how many traditional wiccans get offended by The Craft. It has nothing to do with actual wicca or witchcraft.

But The Skeleton Key is ok if you like a ghost movie set in the haunted south.

I'd personally suggest the remake of House On Haunted Hill, despite its flaws.

I recently saw a movie on youtube that came out in 1980 called The Changling which I liked. It is about a man who rents an old mansion that turns out to be haunted. It is based on a novel that was inspired by events the author actually experienced.

While it concerns a space ship rather than a house, I'd suggest Event Horizon.

Isn't that the movie that got toned down and trimmed down for a PG 13 rating due to complaints about gore? No thank you.

If you like fake horror documentaries I recommend The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.
