Now, while the Brits have had this on DVD for some time, we Aussies recently got a 'vanilla*' DVD release of Hogfather, the Sky ONE adaptation of Terry Pratchett's novel of the same name. I have watched the first part fully already (having watched snatches on YouTube), and must confess that I enjoy it, although it is a darker adaptation than I originally thought. While Hogfather is one of Pratchett's darker novels, it seemed even darker for that.
Now, at first, I thought Marc Warren's portrayal of Jonathan Teatime (or should that be "Teh-ah-tim-eh"?) was too weird, but he actually gives an offbeat villainous approach that came to grow on me, while Michelle Dockery is the perfect Susan. Until Ian Richardson came along, I didn't think anyone could surpass Christopher Lee's performance as Death in the animated Discworld shows, but the now (and unfortunately) late Ian Richardson makes Death a wonderfully humourous, yet grave character, and Marnix Van Den Broeke does a good job under the skeleton, so to speak. The only true complaint I really have (besides niggles about the story) were the CG effects used for the Hogfather's boars.
I know this is already a year old for the Brits, but Hogfather has just made its US debut, and I wanted people's opinions. I'm also doing a poll for the favourite character. (Note that it is only for characters who have a large role. Lord Downey and Corporal Nobbs won't appear, sorry)
Also, I am very much a Pratchett fan/encyclopedia, so ask me for any clarification about, say Susan's background, the Assassin's Guild, or the Auditors.
*A 'vanilla' release is one with no, or few, special features. Thankfully, most of the special features are available as iPod podcasts for free, with the exception of the deleted scenes.
