Here's another survey for all you science fiction fans: Name your favourite fictional robot character! I have to admit I like all of the above, but my favourite is probably Bishop from "Aliens" - he is such a cute character, and behaves much as I suppose a robot programmed for human interaction would behave, not too clueless and not too eccentric.

I have to say that there aren't that many robots that I like per se, as many of my favourite sci-fi artificial beings are either cyborgs (Daleks, Cybermen, Motoko Kusanagi) or bioroids (the androids from Blade Runner). I'd have to say that my top three are, in chronological order: Marvin, Kryten, and Bender. I decided to choose Kryten, 'cos Marvin's too much of a depressive, and Bender is too human.

Gigolo Joe from AI - please accept my order for the first one off the production line :)

Of course I have to mention a noteworthy few you left out:
Gort - The day the earth stood still
Temar - Metropolis
K9 - Dr Who
The Clockwork droids in Dr Who "Girl in the fireplace" were pretty cool too :)
and of course al the others listed are great anyway.

I, Robot FTW! It is my all-time favorite movie, I have seen it many times, and plan to see it many more times.

Where's the option for Optimus Prime? :(

More to the point, where are the options for Megatron and Starscream? ;)

(and isn't Robbie the Robot actually the robot in Lost In Space as well? Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!)

My favourite robot is Data, who is technically an android. (! !) He's so endearing! It seems to me that Dr. Soong manaqed to create Data with all of our human strengths and none of our flaws. He lacks emotion, true, but human emotion is his holy grail and he clearly won't ever stop trying to surpass what he is. :)

I had to go with Bender, but if one were to include Robots in video games, HK-47 from the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games would have definitely been my choice.

Yeah, Sonny was pretty cool, but mostly because Alan Tudyk is awesome.

Where's Colussus. I luv that movie The Forbin Project. In fact Colossus is the name of this computer I'm typing into. OK, maybe he doesn't fit your stereotypical robot but he was a machine that had a mind of his own. He's one machine/robot that stands out in my mind. He did all kinds of things to manipulate this poor guy named Forbin, and controlled every mechanical thing aboard the vessel. This could happen in the future. The high-tech technology granted by the government to protect us against nuculear war. Thus taking over our own weapons of mass destruction and then eventually the very technology we take for granted.

I loved "The Forbin Project" too, but I chose to limit this survey to humanoid robots (stretching the concept a bit to allow for R2-D2), otherwise I would have had to include a lot of other AIs like HAL, K.I.T.T., Agent Smith from "The Matrix" etc.

I like Robby the Robot, but David from A.I. was just so aspie in a realistic way, you just have to love him. BTW, does Edward Scissorhands count? I know he's not really a cybernetic person, but he is a machine man. Though that's more surreal fantasy steeped with symbolism rather than science fiction, Edward is actually my favorite machine person.
