I figured at a rate of about 4 posts a day it might take me a year.
Either I have been posting WAY more than that, or my calculations were way off.
I don't know whether to give an acceptance speech or blush and hide for a few days and hope nobody notices me ever again.

I think I liked being a snowy owl better.

I like snowy owls.

I'm sorry the experience was so traumatic that you've entirely forgotten about it but thank you for your service. :salut:

gaining Veteran status, used to be based on making more than 2000 or 3000 posts; nowadays, it's due to being on the site for some time.

Nope, rather I tend to some times get on people's nerves in more serious topics, when not posting long & extensive replies. Anyways, your a-okay

I don't think it has anything to do with how long you have been here - I had an account for years and never posted. I never got past Emu Egg until I started posting.

I think the threshold for being a "Veteran" is around 500 posts or so now. I remember becoming a "Veteran" relatively quickly and being amazed that it was that easy (and also thinking I need to post a bit less often... lol).

^ that would make sense - I was at around 500. I thought I had to get to 1000 and then I could pick my "flying thing" I was wondering if there was a "My Account" option for picking my "flying thing" like the FAQ said - or if that was only true under the old system. The last thing I recall being was a "velociraptors" which apparently had feathers (according to Dr. Internet).

I wonder if I could elect to be a mosquito? (flying thing)

According to the dusty parchment known as the Wrong Planet FAQ, the ranks are assigned as follows:
viewtopic.php?p=695702#p695702

So no, not time-related.

It's a shame the custom rank wasn't implemented in this new version of the WP software, though. That was fun.

My Profile shows:
"Total posts: 650"
So the FAQ entry for the Phoenix is no longer accurate (unless I won some random door prize).

Thanks, Cornflake, for clarifying the "pick your own flying thing" detail.

Ah great - it turns out that the actual rank setup is now different to that shown in the FAQ (updated).

Quote:
Emu Egg = 0-8
Butterfly = 9-17
Hummingbird = 18-24
Tufted Titmouse = 25-49
Yellow-bellied Woodpecker = 50-74
Blue Jay = 75-99
Raven = 100-124
Snowy Owl = 125-174
Pileated woodpecker = 175-199
Sea Gull = 200-249
Toucan = 250-299
Deinonychus = 300-399
Velociraptor = 400-499
Veteran = 500+
