Hello. My name is Jason. I was diagnosed about three years ago with what used to be called Asperger's, at the age of 54. I have served in the military (Navy), worked 20 years for a major shipbuilding company, and am now a middle school math teacher.

I need help. I don't understand people or emotions. I have a hard time relating to people, which probably sounds weird coming from a school teacher, but I teach math. Numbers don't judge.

Anyway, I look forward to learning from all of you going forward.

Jason

What a coincidence! I know teacher named Jason. He lost both his legs not too long ago aftter an illness.
Surprisingly enough, he seems happier now that he has moved on from that! Now that they are gone there is no doubt he has a disability compared to before when he used crutches all the time.

Austism is like the before Jason in that you couldn't see his disability when he was on crutches.

I used to have trouble relating to people because I'm AMAB but used to get misgenderedas a girl all the time.
I finally accepted I'm transgender. I do social activities easily now by presenting as female so folks don't get confused by my appearance, voice, or mannerisms.

welcome, late diagnosed too at age 68, it really puts a lot of perspective on things of the past. You are in the right place, among others who understand. Glad you found us.

Welcome to Wrong Planet. You indicated that you need help so I will try and give you some useful information. I have Asperger's Syndrome (Aspie for short). I am 75 years old and have survived well. I will try and pass on some information that may sound strange.

Humans are one of the most complex beings that have ever existed on Earth and perhaps the entire solar system. The reason why is because we have multiple brains. The human skull has two sides, one on the left and the other on the right side of your skull. Normally the left side is the dominant daytime brain and the right side is our night time brain that exist in Deep NREM and REM sleep. But Aspies are the opposite. It is like we live in the Wrong Planet. We have a very interesting skill set. Some of us are very good in Math, Physics, Science etc. Others are artist, musicians, writers, poets. But unfortunately it is almost like male Aspies are outcast. Neurotypicals (NTs) can generally spot me within about 30 seconds because I do not perform direct eye to eye contact. I look slightly off to one side. I put this to the test several years ago. I bought some special one way glasses (the same type of glasses the police used years ago to prevent people from reading them when they pulled someone over). I put it to the test and would wear it when I was up and about. With the glasses on, total strangers would come up to me and begin conversations. It was amazing.

There is a very good book that I would suggest reading. It is called "Whole Brain Living" by Jill Bolte Taylor. She suffered a massive stroke around age 35. She came very close to dying. But she came back and survived. Before the stroke she was a medical doctor but she returned as a totally different person, a right brain person. She goes into great detail about the construct of the human brain. Anyways it is a good read.

You feel stress. Believe in yourself. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses (+s and -s). But Aspies are a little different. We have ++s and --s. And some of us have +++++s and -----s. The secret for Aspies is to learn what your +s are and use them to counteract your -s.

Understanding people and emotions is not easy. Hopefully you can get some tips and ideas from the folks here. Welcome to WP!

I used to be a teacher many years ago. I taught 9th grade English (not ESL).
