Hello all. I have been looking at this site for several years and finally decided to join.

I self-diagnosed about 6 months ago. At my graduation, one of my professors told me that he'd guessed I had Asperger's the day he met me, more than 2 years ago (someone in his family has it as well).

I don't know too many other people who are at all like me. I guess the number one person who is, is my boyfriend, who suspects he might be an Aspie also. I have always felt "different" in a way I couldn't quite describe. I guess that other people noticed it too, and it usually made them uneasy enough to attack me. I would not have survived the bullying in grade school if it hadn't been for my mom--she fought many battles on my behalf. Interestingly, while she didn't know exactly what was "wrong" with me, she guessed "mild autism." Not bad, considering that Asperger's wasn't a DSM diagnosis until I was almost done with high school. By then, I had learned how to "blend in" well enough to be ignored by people who might otherwise have given me a hard time. I even had a few friends--mostly male (I'm female). I've always gotten along with guys better than girls, though now it's starting to even out a bit.

So, what else? I just got my Master's in Applied Criminology and am looking into teaching positions. Meanwhile, I pay the bills with my fast-food job (not as bad as it sounds, believe it or not).

I probably wanted to say a lot more but...can't remember what now...oh well. Anyway, I'm glad to be here, thanks for reading.

Hi! Sounds like figuring out the AS could really be a key for you. Did they ever diagnose you with something and give you medication growing up?

Thanks for the welcomes, guys. :)

eon, to answer your question, I was sent to several therapists before I was 10. None of them could figure out anything concrete. It would be interesting to get hold of my old records. I'm pretty sure that the phrase "social anxiety" was in the therapists' notes somewhere. This was the 1980's. The diagnosis of "Asperger's" didn't exist (or if it did, none of the therapists knew about it). I did not fit the symptomatology of "classic" autism.

Figuring out my AS has been helpful. Finally, "it" has a name. I'm not crazy about labels, but in this case it's nice to have a more specific one than just "weird."

by the way, super congrats on the degree! my spouse just finished her BS in biology. I've shared in the accomplishment by supporting her through some milestones that lead up to her ability to complete the degree.
