What is your first name?
Rhymes with Planet, and meeting any Brad is always tense.

Age: 40!

Location: South Australia

Hobbies and Interests:
(field) Hockey, Scuba Diving, cooking, art, psychology (human behaviour), I used to be in Toastmasters, should go back, it was the best thing for my all round social skills. And if you've got any round shiny marbles you don't want - I'll have them.

Why are you here?

I want to learn more about aspergers and specific coping skills and maybe make some like minded friends.

When were you diagnosed?
My therapist stopped arguing with me about it last month when she saw me avoid eye contact with the receptionist with whom I was angry because the waiting room always smelled like sewerage and she would not let me open the windows. I have not had a formal diagnosis with an AS specialist. Is it Aspie to want one? I was/am in therapy because I was depressed and I had overwhelming "attacks of the inertias" - stuck and can't get moving, too much procrastination. Having someone agree with me about being aspie is a relief.

Favourite subjects at school:
Maths and Chemistry - because I could get the questions right whether or not the teacher liked me. At school there were no computer classes - but I could work the one and only computer better than anyone else in the entire school.

Favourite music:
I like something of everything and dislike something of everything. Very fond of Crowded House, Xavier Rudd and Ben Lee.

Books:
Currently reading Len Beadell's Too Long in the Bush about pioneer road making in the 1950s across the Australian Deserts. Avoiding starting on Neal Stephenson's Trilogy because I won't come up for air until I'm done.

TV shows/Movies:
Dr Phil, Oprah (tragic, I know), The Glass House, Myth Busters, Las Vegas, NCIS (misogynist but I watch anyway), House, Boston Legal, RockKwiz and Nerds FC Movies: Starstruck, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monty Python, NZ version of LOTR, Local Hero, The Long Kiss Good Night, fight club, The blues brothers, Big Trouble in Little China

Instrument: Not very active, but have done singing, bagpipes, and piano.

Do you like sports?
Only to play - hockey mostly. Have played basketball, soccer, touch footy. You may think that this means I have fine motor skills - until you see my sewing.

Family:
I'm the oldest of 3, and never married, no children.
I suspect Grandfather and father had aspergers, and their wives had/have aspie traits. All of them were perfectionists and "Intellectual Snobs". Hard to live with and so am I.

Clothing: I'm a scruff. Grunge was my favourite fad.

How did you find this website?
Through the Tony Attwood website
Its a bit cobwebby (hasn't been updated for ages) but it has a lot of good info.

Job: Anything to do with computers.

Plans for the future?
Reform SA real estate trading law, Buy a house, Scuba dive on Great Barrier Reef, make being self employed more lucrative.

Any comments?
I love internet forums. If I come across as Ms know-it-all-smart-arse - challenge me.

I thought WP meant Word Processing (NOT!! !! Duh!). Took me ages to find that NT meant NeuroTypical ie "Normal". By way I always considered being called "Normal" an insult. I'm far better than boring "Normal". I am writing a glossary for this place - you all use so much jargon and TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms).

I don't understand why a site dedicated to people who don't handle sensory overload well, has so many intrusive adverts. I hate how slow it makes the site go. I appreciate the ads help fund the site but there must be a better way.

Why are you here? Because I have always wondered what was wrong with me, and why I was different, and the more I learn about AS, the more I think there's nothing wrong with me, but there's a big chance I am an Aspie.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): Not (yet). I have an appointment with the doc next month.

Favorite subjects: music

Favorite music: Jason Mraz (I love all sorts of music, but Jason is my hero. I am working on doing every tune he does)

Books: 'De Larf', by Midas Dekkers (Dutch author)

TV shows/Movies: Spaced (channel 4 sitcom), The Butterfly Effect (Director's cut), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Instrument: my voice.

Why are you here? Because I have one sone who was just diagnosed, another son who refuses to go to the Doctor to get his diagnosis (we just maintain with him) and a spousal unit who is undiagnosed - she would go to the Doctor if she just would.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): skipping

Favorite subjects: Music, Star Trek, My kids

Favorite music: Indie, Jazz

Books: Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand / The Pillars of The Earth - Ken Follet / A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bell Bryson

I think you'll find that most of us are in the same boat here, it seems to be a fairly common thing for a lot of people to realise that they fit the general description of AS from books/magazines/internet rather than seek a formal diagnosis. This isn't necessarily a bad thing either, so long as your sources are reliable. I'm not overly proud of the fact that I first twigged to having some kind of ASD from reading a Men's Health article.

I would happily have gone without a diagnosis altogether, but my Mum asked me to get one because she suspected that I had Fragile X, which is hereditary, and my older nephew is growing up to have a lot of the same problems as me. It turned out that Mum wasn't overly well informed on Fragile X though! :P

Unfortunately, according to Alex, the ads aren't helping fund the site; they're funding the site, period. There's been a thread about how he was trying to run the site on member contributions before resorting to the ads because nobody was kicking in (including me  ), or at least not enough to cover the expenses of running the site. In all fairness, not a lot of WP members are financial enough to contribute, due to patchy or non-existent work situations.

Any suggestions?

I've noticed, through web research, that there's a lot more AS support based in Queensland than anywhere else in Australia. I'm curious as to why that is...not to mention, a little envious.
