What is your first name? I'd rather not say right now

Age: 23

Location: Rhode Island, USA (but I'm originally from Connecticut)

Hobbies and Interests: Computers (games and fixing them), history, names, reading, writing

Why are you here? After years of denial, I'd finally like to learn more about AS.

When were you diagnosed?(skip if you don't have a disorder): 1995

Favorite subjects: History--at least I liked it enough to get a degree in it.

Year/Grade:

Favorite music: I'll listen to just about anything.

Books: I mostly read history and fantasy books.

TV shows/Movies: Lost, the occasional Spanish soap opera, and probably a bunch of TV shows and movies I can't think of at the moment.

Instrument: Piano since I was 10 and sometimes I sing. I also have a guitar, but I haven't played in years.

Do you like sports? Nope.

Family: I live with my boyfriend and sometimes I like his family better than my own. My mom died when I was 21, my dad and older brother are horrible at keeping in touch, and I have extended family in several other states.

Clothing: I dress for comfort.

How did you find this website? Looking for AS information.

Job: House-girlfriend right now, but I really need to find a job.

Plans for the future? The ideal of house and 2.5 kids sounds nice.

Any comments? I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Two and a half hours north of Winnipeg??? 8O Egad, where are you, in Churchill? Polar bear territory? I'm half a country to the east of you, near Montreal.

You say there was a diagnosis for Aspergers in your file and nobody told you? That's awful. Yet I think that's what they do. How come they tell everybody but not the person who has it? I'm chasing around trying to get a diagnosis now, and I bet there's one lying in some file somewhere. :?

Name: Dale

Age: 38

Location: Los Angeles

Hobbies/Interests: Sci-fi / fantasy, writing, movies, computers, objectivism. Very recently got into drawing again.

Why are you here: Suspect I'm an Aspie

When were you diagnosed: Haven't been. Not sure.

Favourite subjects: Science & math early on, later enjoyed Literature

Year/Grade: Master's degree in comp sci

Music: I don't collect, but occasionally I'll listen to something if it's convenient like radio or sometimes streaming off the net.

Books: Read more non-fiction lately, political and such. When younger, read lots of fantasy and sci-fi. Still love fantasy and sci-fi though and eat the Harry Potter books like potato chips.

TV Shows: South Park, 4400, Smallville, BS

Movies: Somewhat broad tastes, but especially sci-fi / fantasy.

Instruments: trumpet when I was in school

Sports: None. Always picked last in school. I did do a little swimming recently and have since stopped. I flip my pens and pencils with incredible skill though.

Family: Mother, 3 siblings.

Clothing: I cycle through about 7 shirts for work, 5 of them identical except for color. They have to have a collar because I wear a badge and can't stand the lanyard against my neck. Cycle through 4 pants for work. Shorts and t-shirt preferred when not working. I change as soon as I get home. VERY difficult to find comfortable shoes. Can't stand a watch or necklace against my skin. Can't wear tube socks because of that ridge against my toes.

How did you find this website: I read the Dilbert blog and someone told Scott Adams in a comment that he had Asperger's Syndrome so I looked it up on Wiki and thought "That's ME!". It linked back to here.

Job: Software Engineer

Plans for future: I'm about to become unemployed for a year to explore my creative side-- primarily my writing including a novel I've been working on but also a little drawing. I may take art lessons.

Comments: I fit the symptoms much better when I was younger than I do now, which is why I wonder whether I truly am an Aspie. However, I know my social development was severely stunted and happened late in life. I was very proud of myself for teaching myself to be more sociable in about the last 10 or 15 years, but it definately felt like I had to force it and learn it in a very procedural way. I'd notice strong reactions from people to something I did or said and think to myself "OK, what I just did, that was BAD. Don't do that." It's kind of how I think of stutterers. I hear they have to learn tricks to speaking correctly and concentrate so as not to stutter. Socializing, especially with new people or a lot of people, is like that for me, but I want to be able to socialize well so I learned. It's very mentally demanding and exhausting. To this day, I hate smalltalk. It makes me want to rip my eyes out, but I tolerate a small amount as a necessary evil. On the other hand, I can sit at a table in a coffee shop with close friends and chit-chat all night about topics I'm interested in.

I suspect I'm an Aspie, but of course I don't know. To me, it seems like these symptoms are more common, but maybe that's just because I gravitate toward other aspies or people with moderate aspie-like traits. I'm not sure if it matters whether I am because I feel like I've learned to cope pretty well and I'm not sure what I would do at this point if I found out I was. It sure would explain a lot though!
