Hello all,

I'm a 47 year old woman who was just finally and relievingly diagnosed with autism yesterday. There is finally something that can explain all my quirks! I have been autistic my entire life and I had absolutely no idea. I thought I was a synesthete, socially awkward (unless I was really and truly in the mood and that took a LOT of energy) perhaps had some tendencies of borderline personality disorder from childhood trauma, prone to emotional outbursts when I was overstimulated all from what I thought was a defect in my character. These traits persisted no matter how hard I tried to heal them!

It turns out, I just didn't understand myself and I was inadvertently denying my nature the entire time. No wonder nothing would heal.

I had figured out how to mask all the things I thought were weird about my extra sensory perception of light and color, about my socially awkward tendencies, but I honestly didn't do such a great job at it. I tried to stuff them and I became an overachiever who didn't make any waves, and what a great job I did at that, in school and then professionally. But the reality was, is I was trying to shove myself into a box not only that I didn't want to be in, but that there is no way I would ever fit into anyway, no matter how hard I tried. And you know where it showed most glaringly? In my failure at intimate relationships. Failure after failure after failure. I think I just touched into the reality that I actually don't want to have an intimate relationship. Especially not until after I get to know my new self!! My dogs and my creativity and my career and my extended family and friends are more than enough for now.

My formal diagnosis came yesterday. There is a lot of pain when I touch how much I've denied what my heart truly wanted so that I could fit in.

Thanks for reading. I wonder if anyone out there has had a similar experience...

Thanks for the welcome. They are a sweet pair of cockapoos who love to play. One is little and white and one is big and black.

vanessaaimee, Welcome to Wrong Planet.

I dug a little deeper an I noticed that you are into Acupuncturist. That is an interesting career field.

I know you are exploring at the moment. People with our traits on Wrong Planet are very different then others. We live in a world where we feel we have been born on the Wrong Planet. Understand we have a different set of skills then other people and we also have a different set of weaknesses then other people. The secret is to use our skills to overcome our weaknesses.

My high sensory perception allows me to do acupuncture very well. I always know where the pain is, where the active points are, and I delight in sensing the energy as it moves through the channels. I've got the social aspect of it down too-lots of empathy and mirroring and attention I'm able to lavish upon people. But I always wondered why I would need lots of quiet time after I worked, like why that was more than enough social interaction to satisfy my needs. Like I said, it's a relief to finally have an answer.

Do any of you have a career or hobby which allow your special talents to shine in a similar way? I'd love to hear. This whole new world is opening up now...

Welcome to WP!

I have had a lifelong fascination with maps, and I ended up getting a degree in urban planning.

Not a lot of opportunities in it, though.

Welcome to WP! I hope you like it here and continue visiting.

And, yes, isn't it wonderful getting the diagnosis and suddenly understanding so much!

I was hoping to prompt Vanessa to show her cockapoos dogs
I couldn't think of a way to say that sentence without it sounding weird.

*Image posting for newbies*
First you need a host that allows direct access to the image (as opposed to a webpage showing the image). Many here use postimages.org
Upload a picture to your default folder (or one you create) and if you can't see a series of copy link buttons when you select your image, hit "share" and copy the link labelled "direct link to image"
Come back here to a "post a reply" window.
Click the image icon at the right hand side of the edit window tools above. (tools don't work until page has finished loading)
Paste your copied link into the popup and hit insert into message
Add text if desired and preview or submit.

So.... Show us your puppies canines. :D

Humans are a very unique creation. This is because we have multiple brains. Some exist on the left side of the skull. These are the dominant daytime brains and some exist on the right side of the skull which are support brains that exist during REM and deep NREM sleep. But sometimes we die before we reach the age of transition when a child becomes an adult which is around age 12. When this happens we have a brain flip and the two sides exchange places. That is why we are different.

But our right side brain is very different then our left side brain. It is why we feel like we are living on the wrong planet.

Because of this change between the two sides of our brain, we have many differences. Many times we tend to focus on our weaknesses. But we also have unique talents. Things that normal people do not possess. That is why you are an expert in acupuncture. It is one of your special skills.
