I had no idea a forum like this existed.

I am retired, living with my wife in the Pacific Northwest USA. While I grew up somewhere on the Autism spectrum, the condition wasn't known at the time. Looking back, I am sure I was on the spectrum. I grew up in a total vacuum, unable to make human contacts, lacking most communication skills and friendless. It's been a hard go. I now display many adult symptoms, and I am pretty certain I would have been diagnosed had such existed back then. I'm late in life, now, and have managed to overcome most, not all, of this condition.

Looking forward to engaging with you guys!

Rod

Welcome Rod Turner....hope you find the forums interesting .Lots of experience on this site . Yes gotten alittle grey around the edges before knew for sure about being Neurodiverse ...diagnosed by a p- doc ...and still did not sink in for a number of years..but was so busy just try to stay sane and get through the days ..did not wish to try to figure it ,
Couldn't be me ! I saw autism and MR cases over the year , but I wasnt , non verbal or not communicative.
like my little sister ....but having no social skills,,and fewer friends all my life until the backend part of it ..
Just by dumb luck got 2 ..even a 3rd kinda part time friend , but not harmful ...So this place was a very nice place :D
To come to visit.

Welcome! I hope you like it here.

And, I am an Aspie so I've got several comments:

1. WP has a few glitches. One, the page for entering "Your Profile" contains an error. It tells you to enter your "Date of Birth" in mm/dd/yyyy format. I got better results with dd-mm-yyyy format (day-month-year in that order, all three in numeric digits, and separated by hyphens instead of slashes).

2. You might find AQ interesting. That is, of course, unofficial. If you decide to consider an official diagnosis it will likely cost you a few thousand...some of which might be covered by your health insurance. (I thought the official diagnosis process was kind of fun!) However, it is important to note that neither an official nor an unofficial assessment is required to be on WP. You just need to be interested in the topic, and some folk here only have an unofficial self-diagnosis (or even know for certain that they are not on the Spectrum).

3. Yeah, the DSM has been changing.
- In 2019 I was diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 1 (Mild)
\o/with a note that I also met the criteria previously associated with Asperger's Syndrome
- 2013–2019 I was an undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 1 (Mild)
- 1994–2013 I was undiagnosed Asperger's Syndrome
- and before that I was just weird.

Having been able to overcome so much and also having a wife to keep you company are great things. I hope that your life is doing well now that you have come to terms with your autism and are understanding yourself better.

Hi!

Forums like this one are dying out. But honestly this tends to be my preferred form of online communications. Forums like this.

This is sad to hear - I also prefer to stay away from social media.

BTW ... Welcome, Rod :)
