I'm glad I found this place. I've had Aspergers and depression all my life, but when I was a kid it wasn't even diagnosed as it. I was just basically told I was odd. Teachers didn't know what to do with me, so they threw me into a class full of juvenile delinquents for two years.

I've been in trouble almost all my life. Teachers treated me different, made me carry around a "behavior sheet" and forced me to sit in the front of the class. During my 4th grade year the teacher basically told the class even before I arrived on my first day that I had "issues" and basically singled me out.

I got away with nothing. Kids treated me different and I lashed out. I was sent to six different schools, got into fights a lot, and got thrown out of high school.

I turned it around, went to community to complete my high school. But I've never fit in. Even people I thought were friends I learned talked behind my back about how "weird" I was. It's hard to trust anyone.

I'm a writer, and been published. I find the work fitting, since I don't have to deal with people. I've told very few people about my condition, because the times I have, they've thrown it in my face.

I'm glad to finally be able to talk to people like myself

-Grant

hi grant, welcome

you wrote:

it sort of happened to me, but in secondary education

from between your lines, i think we might just be meeting more often

i've self-diagnosed AS at 51 not 4 weeks ago, had confirmation from an orthopaedic professional, who is now assisting me in getting back into the system (i seem to have dropped out of)
that includes a red tape bypass to get preliminary dx from her colleague psychiatrist
i could get the call any minute 24/7 (ah, there it is... not)

don't want to get into things too deeply yet, don't want to mess up the picture with all sorts of unchecked self-interpreting - done that for about 30 years, look where it got me - so save the education bit for later

stumbling upon WP is what decided it for me, i simply saw

good luck

Welcome GrantZilla,

Cool that you're a writer, there were quite a few questions about writers and writing here less than a month ago. Your thoughts will be quite welcome.

Yeah, I've always loved writing. Mysteries are my favorite stuff to read and write. I worked as a private investigator for a while, which was really cool. Doing workman comp jobs, where I'd catch fools stating they got a back injurry and can't work, but video tape them re-roofing their house.

But the work was really inconsistent, and didn't offer steady income. But it did fuel me with a lot great stuff to write on.

My first manuscript I sent to a compition and made it to the last round. Had I won it would been publushed by a big publisher and 35k to start my second book. Got rejected at the end because the word length was too small, and it'd be hard to market. I think was 54k, and most publishers for the genre want stories atleast at 60k.

That's understandable, because more people that buy books want to get "their money's worth" which means don't want a paper thin book they can read in a night. lol

But that's just how I write. I don't waste a lot of time on detail, just straight to the point. So my stories I guess lack the filler. My stories kind of read how I'd write a report when I did PI work, but a little more fictionalized lol

Ahhh... if only i had more discipline and talent... yeah, writing would such an excellent people-free job!

Mysteries though?? i love to read, but i dislike most mysteries. here's why: if it is a well written book, then it is too easy to figure out, and you always know what's going to happen. the only time a mystery ever suprises me is when it is a badly written book, when the author actually lies to throw you off track, or suddenly aliens come in or something completely silly and the ending makes no sense. so mysteries are pretty lose-lose that way.

welcome to WP!

I've had short stories published and I have worked in several papers in my area. I am also a boxing writer, and have written some articles on recent boxing matches.

I'm finally sitting down to write my first novel, having been able to build myself up to level. My biggest problems as a writer is consistency. In my short stories they would come off strong, but the consistency would drift towards the end. Example is characters starting to act out of character, ect.

Also, as can see, my gramar is a problem as well, so I had to work on these things before tackling something as big as a full length book.
