Any consideration for allowing original WP posters the option of limiting the number of responses in a discussion thread?

By allowing WP members the option to specify the maximum number of responses in a discussion thread, it's possible to curb confusion stemming from lengthy threads, and boost continuity in discussions.

Discussion threads limited to around 25 posts seem like reasonable limitations. Yet, other discussions threads limited to 10 to 15 posts can also seem like reasonable limitations.

In short, options for limiting the number of responses might just encourage WP members, and browsers alike to better understand WP sentiments!

Unfortunately that's not possible with the forum software, and I think it's also somewhat unreasonable - topics attract varying interest, making it impossible to predict how popular one would be and the number of likely responses to it.
It seems a contradition in terms to say that restricting the number of responses would result in boosted continuity, but maybe I'm missing something?

Does the software
allow for a limit
on the size of each post?

Few things ruin the continuity
of a thread
more than a post
that goes on and on
without any apparent meaning
or connection to the thread.

 You know what I mean...

^ Special dispensation granted for medical reasons, and has been so for around eight years.

A post's size is limited to 60,000 characters - pretty generous, considering members aren't charged for data storage.

2,000 characters seems to be more than enough to get any point across.  This was what could be displayed in a single 25x80 screen on a Monochrome Display Adaptor (MDA) back in the IBM-PC/XT days.

Could an OP just request the thread be locked when they think there have been enough responses?

I sometimes get a thought in my head and really want to discuss it, then after a couple of replies or so I become disinterested in the topic and wish I hadn't started the thread in the beginning. Then when I think it's died someone bumps it a few months (or years, which is really annoying) later. But I don't like to keep asking the mods to lock the thread unless there are personal attacks or whatever in it. It'd be nice if the OP had the option to click a button that added the word Resolved in the title, in these brackets [...]. Not the same as locking exactly, but it will make members be aware that the topic in the thread has been resolved, even if they want to add a reply they'll still know that and it might stop an argument being started back up again. Some people stumble upon old threads in the stupid ''related topics'' section and only read the first post and reply like it's a new thread, not noticing the posts in between where the OP could have stated that the discussion has been dropped or resolved.

^ That's a good idea; I've often seen it used on technical forums to show a problem has been solved (by adding "[SOLVED]" to the thread's title) which is useful when seeking solutions instead of questions.

A WP member may run out of time to edit a thread title but a moderator request to add "[Resolved]" to the title shouldn't be an issue - except that, owing to WP forum software limitations on the length of a title something may have to be truncated to fit.
