Don't they say us Aspies tend to interpret things literally and sometimes have trouble because of that?

Yep.
The problem I have is that because some aspies have issues, we have to conform to the lowest common denominator.
Creativity and self-expression are crippled.
This is not the way I would have gone. 8)

Over the decades I've learned that sometimes those durn NTs use phrases that don't seem to make sense (at least not to me). But once I've figured out what the phrase means to them then I just translate it when I hear it. Isn't the correct substitution for "when men were men" something along the lines of "back when life was more difficult"?

To me, the expression "when men were men" was meant to be tongue-in-cheek.
Archie Bunker on steroids.
But because of political correctness, humour is often verboten, these days.

But as I said, I think the exclusion of women is the main issue, because back then, it *was* extremely rare for women to work in that field.

Dat's the fact Jack. 8)

I rap, I know all about rhyme schemes, multi-syllable rhymes, and linking rhymes. 8)

Although there's other folks here who are better than I am.

Yes, so very sad for the scientifically-minded people at the time who weren't allowed entry b/c they happened to be female, or in another marginalized group. The gender roles have "loosened up" in my pocket of the US, but are still very restrictive (to all genders).

Oh no. Now we need a trigger warning.

For some reason, when I think of the phrase, I think of "keypunch."

We still had "keypunch operators" in the 1980s.

Fair enough b/c TRIGGER WARNING I was thinking "women punched cads into submission" --- teasing: where's your mind at?

Well, I'm good at pointing out patterns, data conflicts, errors and the such... I don't like doing something about them. OT: How many ASD folks have good executive function? So envious of those folks.

Thats what they meant. Using a keypunch, to punch square holes into Hollerith cards. The cards they used to use to program computers. Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate!

Hard to believe now that even in the 80s computers still had that family resemblance to their technological ancestors: player pianos. Lol!

But if someone wants to interpret it as "women punching cads into submission" thats fine with me too.

Women are the better sex, in my book, and I find any inequality unacceptable.

However,

Not I, said the fly.
Executive dysfunction has been a bane of my life.
It has been a miserable experience.

It’s better to have executive dysfunction than clerical dysfunction.

But can I just fire my dysfunctional secretary and get a new one?
Sadly I can't fire my brain, at least not without making a mess on the ceiling. 8)

As an executive, you could hire and fire anyone you like, provided there isn't a union contract :)
