Until very recently it was possible to access a full list of the members of WrongPlanet by clicking on 'My Account' at the top right of the screen. I found this a very useful and fascinating feature, which comprised a list of over 100,000 members and could be configured alphabetically, chronologically, by post count or whatever.

It seems to have been removed. May I ask why?

Good question. I hadn't noticed that it was gone, but it is so it's likely not just a glitch. That's strange.
I have no idea why the admin would remove that.

If you try "find a member" from the pm page it says "Only Forum Moderators can view the memberlist". Looks like it has been deliberately restricted. Though it might have been done accidentally when someone was messing with the forum configuration a few weeks ago.

A bit surprised to see that this hasn't generated more reaction. :?

The membership list was available by clicking on 'My Account > Options > Registered Users'. One thing that has always intrigued me is that there are apparently two categories of membership. All of us seem to be members of the 'Registered Users' by default, but there is also a mysterious group called 'alexplank'. I'd imagine that this is perhaps made up of the site Developer/Administrator and some moderators, but it did say that anyone could apply to join.

Has anyone here applied for 'alexplank' membership status? Maybe such people are sworn to secrecy? We may never know....

^ For us, it was a very good way to check new members, especially in times when we had trolls who kept making new accounts to keep trolling, but also just to check. And some times just to have fun with ascend by post count etc. Anyway, it was indeed useful and I don't understand why it was removed

I also noticed the alexplank group when I looked at the groups. Like you, I have no idea what that was about at all, and I never requested to join.

I just checked that and that option still seems to work for me, no idea why it doesn't for everyone.
Maybe to make it harder for bots to spam? That's the only reason I can think of.

If you want my opinion it's to hide the actual number of members who post compared to registered members ( which include 1000's of spammers ). The inflated membership numbers look good to potential advertisers or buyers.

^ That's interesting. The membership has more than doubled since that time, but the site is probably only half as busy, at best.

There are still some strange anomalies in respect of the information available on members past and present. For instance, you can click on the names of certain banned members and get their full posting history (I have no problem with that, by the way, wouldn't like to see the removal of all traces of their existence in George Orwell '1984' style). On the other hand, you can click on the names of other users (like the creator of the '4-Letter Word Game') and receive the message 'The requested user does not exist'. How weird is that?

Would be my guess too. That was also when some old moderators who no longer had mod powers (most prominently techstep) stopped having the mod rank.

I wonder who "NuttDan" is? He was THE first member of WP. He even predated Alex! But he left after six years in 2010.
