The negative connotation of “ignorant” is dominant. I wouldn’t use it unless I feel extremely negative about an idea, and that an adherent to this idea is “willfully ignorant,” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

I used to get called an idiot all the time by my mother’s boyfriend.

I wonder if criticizing right wing views is bullying.

I notice in life that lot of people have a hard time handling criticism. Some are just worse than others because you feel you have to walk on eggshells because they take anything as criticism.

I bet if I wrote online "I think having a potty chair in every room so you wouldn't have to take your kid to the bathroom for potty training is lazy parenting" someone out there will think I had just bullied them.

I'm just showing what others have done in the past by judging people's spelling and grammar, implying that their areas of expertise are invalid, or splitting hairs with the wording of their insults and a pocket dictionary.

"f**king ignorant" is even more potent.

No harm, no gain. :P

In that sense, when I told someone "you're an idiot if you think you have to insult people to disagree," I did literally mean the person I was responding to because they had called me an idiot. So I did a comeback and that person and some other people did not like it.

Some people can dish it out but they cannot dish it back in.

What you describe sounds like responding to a personal attack with another personal attack.

Is it a personal attack or a strong disagreement

I'm waiting for League_Girl to judge.

She has already said she meant it

But she did not present her interpretation of my remark. My intent was neither an attack nor a disagreement but without feedback, I can't say if my communication went as intended.

I think you summed her post up perfectly , and my view of LG's post was she was attacked , she retaliated , then others got butt hurt , her point being some like to dish it out but can't take it in return

Yes, I understand.

There's also a cultural aspect to this: in several European countries having very bad grammar is seen in a similar way to how North-Americans see having bad BO, it's not a snobbery issue. but the way we are taught to think about our language and the meaning of words. Most native French speakers, for instance, consider polite to correct as it's supposed to help people not to make the same mistakes repeatedly.

I definitely had to adjust my way of thinking once I started using English-speaking forums, but sometimes, as a non-native speaker I can still get confused by jumbled syntax or grammar, missing words, auto-correct and all that.

But I've learned to keep my mouth shut.

There’s no way I could put Cyrillic words into Google Translate.

I sense it was some sort of witty remark :P

I like the song “Thanks for the Memories.”

It doesn’t mean WP doesn’t have a future.

Thank you, Isa.

I think it's important to remember here that no matter how much some things can get on our nerves, sometimes you've got to learn to live and let live. Or at least not bite anybody's head off over it.

This was posted today in another thread and it's a good way of describing a kind of blindness we all can suffer from and lead to overly-critical, judgemental or cruel attitudes toward others.

And I can’t climb because the snake is going to bite me! Why can’t the man use a little more strength and pull me up!” The man thinks: “I am in so much pain! Yet I’m still pulling you as much as I can! Why don’t you try and climb a little harder!?”

The moral is— you can’t see the pressure the other person is under, and the other person can’t see the pain you’re in. This is life, whether it’s with work, family, feelings or friends, we should try to understand each other. Learn to think differently, perhaps more clearly and communicate better. A little thought and patience goes a long way.

Be kind to people. Everyone we meet is fighting their own battle.

I think WP has a very strong future if people continue this sort of dialogue. Amity had a great idea about getting to the heart of these issues, and the conversation seems very productive now. People seem to be making significant changes, even if it involves baby steps. I see a lot more respect for emotional and intellectual diversity in the past month, and I hope it continues.

I still maintain it's all about understanding the rules, reporting issues, and having them addressed as soon as possible.

I think we're all on the same page now, or at least I hope so.

Ferris' image was perfect!

I hate to say, but my first thought was "What if there's also someone else in the picture, a third person shouting insults at both of them for being friends, and calling them both weak?" I've seen a bit of that here but I think the tone is changing. It's important that we empower one another and remember we are meant to be a family. I think if push comes to shove, most of us would do anything to help someone else. We have to keep that in mind as we post.

I'd still like to know if it's personal attack to call someone a White supremacist , Nazi etc just for being on the right

^ or regarding 'social conservative' as automatically equivalent to 'bigot'. Seems that quite a few members can get away with that in the current atmosphere.
