can you quote your sources for this?
It would be interesting to read what research is behind such a statement.

well, considering the quotation marks used in the term 'mentally ret*d' from PunkyKat's quote, I would think that she would have ment that few people confuse LFA with mental retardation, which that would be my interpretation of it, and well, it would be very hard to argue that such people, who confuse them, don't exist. Heck!, the issue of wether the character of Lennie is autistic or ret*d seems to support her point.

"There's no reason why Lennie couldn't be both autistic and mildly mentally ret*d."
Mildly Mentally ret*d? How was his MR mild? He simply wan unable to learn even simple consepts; that's not mild. I'd say he's pretty moderate/severe; actually.

No there not! Some are, but not most. You could arguably say that most LFA people are MR but not the other way round.

"i think he is mentally ret*d he seems worse than an autistic."
MR isn't nessesarely worse than autism. Both conditions come in different levels. Someone wiuth severe autism would likely be worse than someone with mild Intelectual Disability.

I've read that book and I think he's mentally ret*d, not autistic.

Also on the film Lennie is portrayed as being ret*d.
I can see where you're coming from though.

This.

Although I found the end to be quite sad.

Despite attempts to say otherwise, straight up mental retardation isn't autism. You might say speech is ret*d in some autistics, but generally their brains are of a different structure rather than lacking in mass and total number of connections.

Yeah, I see why you think that specially with the sensory stuff but I think Lennie has some sort of mental/learning disability. There're also references to him getting kicked on the head as well so yeah.

I personally just think he's mentally handicapped (mentally ret*d.)

Cognitive disability and Autism *can* go together, but they don't always do so.

At any rate, John Steinbeck wasn't a psychologist even by the standards of the time, but Lenny was based off of a real person. Obviously it's impossible to know what mental disabilities he may have struggled with now, though.
