For the last six months I have been trying to decide whether or not to get a job. My family don't want me to because they're worried I might not cope. But in a family of five and my dad the only one working we are struggling at times and I really feel like I should be helping to bring in the money.

I suffer from bad anxiety and a lot of the time when I go out I have a panic attack, I recently went out and it resulted in me having a very bad panic attack where I struggled to breathe and ended up collapsing. However I'm hoping with practice that I can better manage anxiety.

I'm not sure whether it's a good idea me getting a job, so I wanted to ask your thoughts on it?

Thank you :)

There are many different types of jobs, some of which you can even do from home. If you want a job mainly to contribute, do some research first. See if there is any kind of field that speaks to you and that may have manageable amounts of stress. And remember, when you get hired somewhere, you usually have a sort of trial period, so if you feel uncomfortable with the work in any way, you can always let your employer know that it isn't quite what you want to be doing at the moment. You'll probably end up trying out different things before you feel at ease enough to stay at a certain place and that is totally fine :)

Thanks for your reply :) I'm going to do some research today and hopefully I'll have a better idea of what's for me by tonight. I'm hoping whatever I apply for I'll be comfortable with, though I expect it might take a while for me to fully settle in to a job.

Do you think I should tell them about the Autism when I apply for a job? I'm not sure whether it's best to tell them or to keep it to myself.

Whatever happens, hopfully it will all work out in the end. I want to get a job and get my life on the right track :)

You probably shouldn’t disclose your autism until you are hired for the job.

A job is a good way for Aspies to maintain social skills and obtain social interaction. With the proper job you may even be able to gain more social skills with practice. But, you need to find the right "fit." Jobs with the same title can have markedly different "triggers."

You cant expect your dad to support you financially for the rest of your life & most people aren't able to get good jobs when they 1st start looking unless they have a great education or connections so it's a good idea to start looking for a job now before you need it so you can hopefully have something decent & money saved up for down the road when you do need it.

Read all of Robert Kiyosaki's books first then decide. Start with «Rich Dad, Poor Dad» and «Cash-Flow Quadrant»

Getting a job is difficult and some times I'm not able to cope, but working is the best thing in my life. It might take you a while, a few failed attempts and set backs, but it's worth the effort. Working gives me self esteem and meaning, I recommend it to everyone.

Update
I've applied for about five jobs now. Some of them are rubbish and don't pay well but when you have nothing like me you can't afford to be picky. I applied for a job working with a garage fixing cars. I helped restore my father's classic Vauxhall Senator so I could at least do that job. Thanks for your help guys :D

There was someone hear that really enjoyed doing prep work for painting cars. He didn't have to interact with customers.

Update.
I just got a phonecall and I have a job interview on Wednesday at 11:15. It's a small shop :) . I'm sure it will involve social interaction but I don't mind so long as its not a lot of socialising.

Good luck on your interview. Make sure you mention that you helped restore your father's classic Vauxhall Senator and you enjoyed doing it.

Thanks buddy :D . I photographed every step of the Senator's restoration so I could take those with me as well. With any luck I'll be employed before the end of next week. :)
