https://globalnews.ca/news/8290971/bc-r ... -shortage/

Just pointing this out because covid has created massive opportunities for people to slide into rather easily obtainable jobs for living wages in many cities.

Now might be the best time of your entire life to get into the workforce if you’ve been sitting on the sidelines - as the same jobs are paying several dollars/hr more today than they did a year or two ago.

It might also be the perfect time to make the switch from one job to another - if you’re already washing dishes and have been for years, chances are pretty good you can get yourself a big fat raise by switching employees to one that Needs a dishwasher.

And if you’d never leave where you’re at, you could use the current job market as a bargaining chip to request a raise in order to retain you.

And there are TONS of other regular jobs hiring at higher wages, too. If you have the ability & desire to become a long haul trucker, there are 80,000 job openings in the USA right now and tons in Canada, too. Locally, gas stations keep running out of regular fuel and sell premium at regular prices every 2-3 weeks because there aren’t enough drivers to deliver fuel.

Construction, retail, restaurants and hospitality etc etc - many opportunities especially in “entry level,” jobs as so many people used their time to “level up,” their skills and knowledge and get into a different career during covid, and tons of older people decided to just retire.. so now employers are scrambling for pairs of hands to put to work -> which to me means that many of you who’ve previously had great difficulty finding a job of any sort will have an easier time Now than any other time in your entire life to find Some employer out there willing to give you a shot at doing Something. Could be good for many on the spectrum! 8)

50K for a dishwasher is a rarity. Dishwashers will be lucky to get $15 an hour.

It is an “employee” market now, which is probably the point of the OP. I would take advantage of this opportunity.

Would the candidate be expected to get their hands wet, to handle plates with other people's food still on them, to handle cutlery that people have put in their mouths, to stand on their own two feet, and to actually work to earn that much money?

Probably all of the above, but, especially due to Covid - I bet gloves would be provided.

The $25/hr (50k) here would probably be equivalent to $15/hr in many other places across Canada and especially the USA.

Everything is super expensive here. People making $35-40+/hr are moving away because they can’t afford to live here.

Yet $25/hr for dishwashing is still a rarity here. Although last year there were a couple news articles about some hamburger and bbq restaurant paying $25/hr to start for cooks. Blah blah blah Vancouver is crazy.

But yes, it’s a job seeker’s market right now for sure - it’s a great time to look for any kind of work, and a lot of people are going to get the biggest raises of their lives to date by taking advantage of the current labour situation.

People get triple that to work on their butt and socialise. They spend 30 seconds actually doing something and when they do have something to do it’s usually divided between 12 people.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone working as a dishhand for 40 hours a week.

I've worked in many restaurants/bars/pubs/golf club etc. It's super common. Meals get served for many hours/day, so there are always dishes to do - full time+ hours. It's fairly common for there to be a full time dishwasher. Usually one full time and another 1 or 2 part time -> depending on the availability of having someone willing to do it full time, of course. Sometimes they also have some basic food prep skills and assist with chopping veggies or whatever to fill in some time between dish rushes, but it's often a full time role - especially for day shift. Far more willing part time evening shifters than there are day shifters, plus the evening food prep has to be done in advance during the day.

People work as dishwashers for way more than 40 hours a week sometimes.

I worked as a dishy but I did it casually and sometimes part time. There were two of us but the other girl didn’t last long. High turnover rate perhaps? I don’t think it’s a job that many people stay in for decades.

It’s not exactly a “career” position—unless you’re an immigrant trying to make a better life for their kids.

Yah it’s a job. A career is a profession that requires training and education. Well it’s a job for students and for disabled people.

And for many others.....like immigrants who want a better life for their kids.

My wife was one of those immigrants. She used to work as a babysitter/caretaker. She moved up to being a Certified Nursing Assistant, then became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was able to pay off her mortgage in her own country, and to save up a substantial amount of money. For about the first 8 years of her being in the US, she had really crap jobs with potential for exploitation. Luckily, she got with a family who didn't exploit her.

I worked with a dishwasher named Colin. He was a retired financial planner, from a very wealthy family. His uncle was Oscar Peterson - a famous jazz musician. His entire extended family has huge $. His father was a banker. They all work jobs to be productive and helpful to society. His sisters are Nurses, his son is training to be a commercial pilot etc. He was washing dishes nearly full time in order to hangout with his Chef buddies he worked at other high end restaurants with And to meet young pretty waitresses. He donated his paycheques to the BC Children's Hospital then worked at his father's Foundation to feed/clothe people.

Not all dishwashers are students or disabled.. some are philanthropists that live in $5M+ homes and golf at The Vancouver Club. Well, Colin, anyways - definitely a statistical outlier.
