Newspaper copy editor/sub-editor for 10 years now. (I've also done some writing.)

There was a false start in library cataloguing too that lasted almost two years. That was between figuring out what I wanted to do and a down-and-out junk job for a year before I got into this field for good.

I am a critical care nurse at a large teaching hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. I specialize in the care of people with brain tumors, spinal cord injuries, and any neurological condition that requires a ventilator and close monitoring like GBS, ALS, or MG. There is just enough excitement, proximity to really smart and talented medical people, and the mix of patient care, family interactions, and figuring out what to do with medications and treatments to keep it interesting. I have had this job for 18 years now. The remuneration is excellent and the benefits are good. They pay top dollar for my expertise and I get to teach the new RN's a few classes. If someone would have asked me 30 years ago what I would be doing now this is about the farthest thing I could have thought of at the time. You just never know where life and love will take you. For what it's worth, Kenorri

I have had lots of different jobs but nothing you could call a career... some 'highlights':

vacuum cleaner salesman - was too honest so didn't get very far with this...

factory operative - screwing caps on test tubes. lots and lots of test tubes. that's about all I've got to say about that...

order line/customer service clerk for mail order company, catering mainly to the elderly - that one was fun... selling thermal underwear and smocks to confused pensioners...

garage labourer - enjoyed this one. fell off ladders a lot, had bacon butties for breakfast, and got partly paid in beer and loan of a van...

Wonder what will be next? something more lucrative hopefully, with a fair bit of autonomy and something interesting to do. :D

I'm a training specialist for the US Postal Service. I do classroom instruction, course development and some technical writing. My current area is industrial safety (OSHA), with emphasis on Hazmat and life safety. I also work part time for the county sheriff's department and serve as Captain of the Reserve Division. I'm not formally diagnosed with AS, but I think that the job description was written for me. Its funny how my "public" persona has allowed me to move away from my AS tendencies just a little bit. I'm not NT by any stretch of the imagination, but I've learned to play one pretty well as long as they don't look too closely.

Well, i've been rapper in a grocery, serving gas in a gas station, welder, press operator, then i moved toward computers. PC tehnician, server technician, server administrator, then i move towards telecom. I'm still today a telecom technician and, with a lot of self-study, i attained the engineer level (without the grade), but that's what i do today.

Each jobs have followed a specific interest at that time but i found out that when i'm finished with a subject, i get totally bored with it and i have to change. This is happening now with telecom. But strangely, no new interest wants to show up. ?

In that world where you're supposed to study something and then do it for the next 40 years, how can we, Aspie, survive ?

I think what he means is when you say rapper, he thinks Kid Rock or something...

I got the wrapper/rapper t hing right away, but comedy/jokes/puns are something I'm very gifted at.

I'm like you, coyote, I find when an interest wanes I need soemthing else. I started out interested in law b/c I wanted to be President (this was in grade schol), switched to journalism and broadcasting by college, back to law by 3rd year of college becasue I like the taking apart of cases and finding little nuances, something I'm very good at, and have been a lawyer for 10 years.

However, I hate litigation (can't stand disputes/always been a negotiator), and have done only wills and estates the last few years. I've always believed in absolute truth, went from head knowledge to knowing Jesus in my heart in college, and last year felt the call to the ministry.

I am hypersensitive, and if I have S it's mild; never felt a real diagnosis would help me, but there are many signs if you will that I might have it. I feel like I'd be great at at developing sermons, and good w/people. I will always love Jesus but who knows if I'll be able to run my own church.

I think I could if it was one of those small, 100-member churches in some farm community somewhere; it'd be hard for me in a big city. But they need pastors everywhere, and God can do anything He wants with me.

If that doesn't pan out, however, there are jobs with Child Evangelism Fellowship I've looked at, as well as other places. But, I need to get through seminary first. However, I am having *lots*of*fun int he process, and I have often considered that if there's one fascination I've had my whole life, it's learning. (Memberized the Presidents and lots of facts about each one at 7-8, the solar system at 9-11, I've had varying different fascinations.)

Rapper in a grocery store...love it. "MC A&P reprazent!"

I've had my share of jobs...security guard, greeting card proofreader, customer service rep, school photographer. They all helped pay the bills while I did radio. I've been a "dumb jock type" at a commercial radio station for 7 years now. It's only a part-time thing, though, and that's why I had all the other jobs. I found a TV job almost 3 years ago. The pseudo-geek in me loves it: pushing buttons and playing with machines all day. But my creative, artsy-type would love to have something with a creative element. The financial advisor in me says it's time to give it up and get something that pays! You'd be surprised what radio and TV people make.

I am currently a senior web developer at a small UX (user experience) consultancy firm. The web has helped me put food in the table for almost ten years, so to speak.

Funny thing is, I didn't majored in Computer Science or programming or any of the geeky careers usually associated with this field. I majored in Graphic Arts at college. Had I followed the rules, I should be toiling away at some local newspaper or print shop as a graphic designer. But the Web was new back in '95, fever and research ensued and my first real job was one as a web designer. And that pretty much defined my career path ever since.

However after almost 10 years, I feel the increasing complexity, 14-hour workdays, stress and demands of the field are already taking its toll on me, and I'm not a tenth as interested on it as I was anymore. I feel kinda trapped, honestly. Back when I was in high school I dreamed of becoming a traditional animator or illustrator. I'm wishing to be able to pick up those long-neglected dreams and begin a career change for good.
