Omg. I was monitoring myself today while teaching to see how often I made eye contact with the students while teaching. Answer:

Never. Not unless I'd asked a question and was recognizing someone who wanted to answer. Sometimes. Often I was just glancing at them, then gazing off in their general direction. When talking after class, different story, though even then it's intermittent. but otherwise I'm looking off to the side, looking at the screen, at the ceiling, you name it.

They don't seem to mind, though, and it's a very friendly class. No one remarked on it during mid-course evals. And at least I'm not groping my face while I'm talking. I think. Though apparently I do strange things with my hands.
