Brainstorming about jobs...

So I guess on Thursday I will finally be meeting an employment specialist to help me start working. So I have been trying to brainstorm all the potential job ideas I can.

So far I came up with starting entry level at a greenhouse or something like that, and so me and my job counselor figure something like greenhouse or tree nursery could be a good idea.

Another idea that seems cool is like a wildlife reserve or something, though not sure there is anything like near enough to get to by bus. On that note I also had the thought of maybe at least throwing an application at the zoo, don't know how much I am interested in that particular idea but its a thought...and would only work if they have entry level positions.

Or I think it could be kind of cool to work at some place like Vitamin Cottage, but I wouldn't want to be like a cashier I'd just want to like stock the shelves and do background stuff like that.

So yeah those are my ideas so far.

If you have your medical MJ card in Colorado you can make a lot of money trimming buds (just snipping with little manicure scissors while you listen to your headphones all day.) Your voc rehab person might not mention cannabis jobs to you because of federal laws, but it is the largest growing part of your local economy. Just go to Craiglist and search "trimmers".

Dog walking? Any kind of deliveries, if you drive? I know a guy who lived abroad for many years, and then couldn't find a job when he got back home. Eventually he made a deal with a local flower shop to deliver flowers to customers. You do have some interactions, but they are very short, and you don't have the same feeling of being stuck like in a shop.

No idea what your typing speed is, but Court Stenographer?

Yeah I don't have a license though and if I did do something like that I'd still want to get a little general job experience first. I just don't want to pay for the license and then potentially not find a reliable job at least not at this point as it would be too much of a risk just based on my financial situation, plus the vocational rehabilitation probably couldn't help me with that since it's federally funded and cannabis is not legal nationally. Either way that is something I have thought of as well.

Maybe I just don't know how much I'd like that...a lot of times people want to talk to you if you have a dog, so not sure I'd want to do it as a job where I was doing multiple walks a day. If I had a dog I wouldn't mind getting interactions based on that but with doing it as a job it could be too overwhelming. I mean I would be interested in jobs working with animals but maybe not in such a public setting as dog walking would be.

I don't drive currently and probably wont for a while so can't do deliveries or anything like that, and as I mentioned in the other post I'd need a license to get a trimming job, and would prefer more experience working first...but if I got a greenhouse or tree nursery job I could use that for a resume to apply for a cannabis job, also then with some employment I'd be better able to afford the license. Right now I have to pay rent and my SSI amount got cut by almost half so just can't really afford to get the license to work in the cannabis industry.

a nursery/greenhouse type job would be awesome!


library jobs can be nice and chill imo (restacking shelves, shelf reading, resource data entry...)

I once applied for "any job you have an opening for" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and had to take three very hard tests I didn't know they had and I scored like a 97 or something on all of them and failed because I was not good enough for their standards etc...

That might be a better approach than focusing so much on just greenhouses/garden centers or tree nurseries, I don't want to be too picky.

Do you need to be a documented worker? Some people have work they need done but don't want to go through the hassles the government requires for hiring employees. You may be able to get a job much easier if you can meet your boss in person and take cash so there isn't an electronic record of your employment some hacker can steal and post on the Internet.

I don't really care about that, if someone wants to personally hire me and just pay cash that would be fine with me, just seems most of those positions require having a car and your own gardening equipment which I don't have. I am thinking about just getting my liscence for working in the marijuana industry so I could apply for trimmer jobs...just worried it may conflict with the voc-rehab and SSI since those are federal programs. Then again if I got a job in that and did well I could probably start making enough money to get off SSI alltogether.

But I mean I am a citizen so I shouldn't need any particular documentation aside from my driving permit ID. Though some jobs seem to want a 'valid drivers liscence' but I just have a permit. I know kind of pathetic at 27 to only have a permit but I am kind of afraid of driving and can't afford a car anyways.
