My son is 10 years old and diagnosed with Asperger's. He loves to read and write and talk. He also loves football (soccer), but has no talent for playing the game, which he now realises himself. His teacher entered him for a citywide competition - Young Football Journalist. He wrote a match report which was submitted and got him through to the final. At that stage all the finalists attended the same football game and submitted a match report.

All the finalists were invited along to a major football ground this afternoon for a reception and presentation of prizes in the two categories, Primary and Secondary schools.

My son won first prize in the Primary school section! Woo hoo!

I have to admit that, although I hadn't really let myself think about too much, I was quietly confident that he would win as his report was so good. His teacher says that his writing shows a maturity and understanding well beyond his years and the judges said there was no debate about who should win first prize!
:D :D :D :D

That is great! Such early successes will help him see that if channeled properly his traits can be an asset to him.

Very cool and congrats to him! Maybe he will be the next Paul Finebaum! (Sports reporter who is local but just got a nationwide radio show - my husband loves Finebaum)

He interested in doing something like that? Does his school have a newspaper and if so does he seem interested in covering sports there?

That can help him keep his connection with the sports he loves too. Awesome job and at 10 years only.
