There's this one Peanuts comic strip where Schroeder is excitedly showing off all the piano and Beethoven-themed gifts he got for Christmas to Charlie Brown. And then he mentions he also got a toy train, but he clearly has no interest in such a thing.

I guess Schroeder's parents wanted him to have at least one gift that would be "normal" for a boy his age. :)

Shouldn't the above title say
Is Liking Trains A Red Signal For Autism?

The only interest I had in trains came from Jack Benny (“Now boarding on track 5 for Anaheim, Azusa and CU—camonga! )

My special interest when I was a kid were television antennas :?: and pianos!

A red flag is normally used, both literally and metaphorically, to signal a problem. Which makes the OP sound like liking trains or being autistic is a "problem".

When I was younger I would line up toys such as My Little Pony or Troll dolls together on shelves and things. One time I had some troll dolls with different jobs lined up in one spot, like a nurse and a firefighter and a police officer... and a mother troll holding a baby. It was because I thought that being a mother was the most important job of all. :)

I don't know whether liking trains is a red flag for autism, but I have autism, I like trains, and I just stuck a red flag decal on a train!
(Ken's locomotive that I promised to put the decals on for him, last summer)

It's not a red flag, it's a difference that's to be celebrated.

Sounds like a winning plan to me!

Well, given that railroad equipment suppliers sell red flags to the railroads ...
for example;
https://rrtools.com/product-category/tr ... gs-staffs/
and
https://www.idescosafety.com/multi-colo ... -flags.htm

... and the suppliers sell red flags to railroads because the government says,
Quote:
"Flagman's signals means a red flag by day and a white light at night, and fusees as prescribed in the railroad's operating rules."

Now that's funny! HAHAHAHAHA! Only a UK railwayman or enthusiast would get that I think? (Or other countries who use double yellows).

I would definitely go as far as saying liking trains is a red flag for autism. No doubt should they include that in the DSM. Both boys are really into trains. Their cousin who is autistic is into trains. I'm not sure if it's the trains alone or the fact that they are lined up nicely after each other.

I'm a railfan, and I didn't get it. North American railroads use yellow signals, but not double yellows. It's always yellow combined with another color (or colour ;)). To complicate the matters further, signaling systems vary between major railroads, but none use double yellow to my knowledge.

It seems to be very common and has helped people consider whether they or their child may be autistic.

I'm against the idea of including it in the DSM though. Special interests are already included and trains is already the most common example people use for autistic special interests. Putting even more focus on it will, if anything, hamper seeking or receiving a diagnosis for people with less typical special interests, not help those with typical ones.
