You'd think that XP would take it up to 11/12 or something. But Vista seems to take 10, and Seven, I think uses 11

If you are getting a brand new laptop for xmas, it should have Windows 7 not Vista.

That's obviously Microsoft's attempt to lure people to Vista. Besides virtual memory, I don't think it's hard to port the other DX10 features back to XP.

Despite what Microsoft wants you to believe, Win7 is just a minor refinement of Vista. The compatibility status for old programs is essentially the same. XP mode is about the only major addition. However, even that is just an updated VirtualPC. The only difference is that you don't have to buy (or hunt for) an XP license.

I went into a store and said a few things. I'm not getting into it here fully. But I call the latest product of operating system from them Seven rather than 7. The person said "The new one is built on top of XP and not Vista" I tried to correct him, but he was adamant it's built on XP.

If getting a laptop, it "SHOULD" have XP on there. But will likely have Seven on there instead, hogging those previous resources for some gaming

So Vista has such a bad reputation they have to say that Win7 is based on XP?

The main thing is this, 32 bit windows is pointless with vista and 7, however once you hit up 64 bit with a minimum of 4 gigs of ram, it's actually worth it.
