Gears of War

Those games bring Michael Bay sensibilities into the world of video games. Complete with his brand of incredibly stupid "comic relief". Marcus Fenix is probably the most boring and generic action video game hero I have encountered on the 360. I also should mention all of the times I got killed because of the auto-cover system trapping me to walls and rubble when I really needed to get my guy moving. And it can be a real chore to find decent legit games thanks to all of the boosting activity that the "Seriously" achievements encourage (and naturally, a lot of these people leave negative feedback to people who just want to play for real).

I also was vastly disappointed in L.A. Noire - but that's because it's damn near impossible for me to read social cues and facial expressions to begin with.

I was going to add Gears to my list too, but I figured if I put it next to Halo, xbox fans might get in arms and/or call me a fanboy. I'll put Gears in the same boat. I don't hate it, but it represents everything I dislike about modern fps. Also, you can add me to the list of those who prefer classic fps like Doom.

I don't think L.A. Noir qualifies as overrated though. I don't think it sold too well, or at least that's what I heard. I don't know whether it really sold poorly, or whether it just sold poorly by Rockstar standards, which, to be fair, is probably used to their ips printing money. I liked L.A. Noir a lot though, even though I'm not very good at reading the faces of the characters either. I hope Rockstar doesn't feel discouraged, and will continue to take risks with new ips, because, though I casually enjoy Grand Theft Auto, I like it when mainstream devs are not afraid to take a chance, and stray outside of the box set by current market trends. Of course, when a company takes risks, it may work out, it may not. Sure, this particular ip obviously didn't win everyone over, but I do think it belongs somewhere in the hall of cult classics.

For the record, though I'm not as huge on Zelda as some people, I played, and enjoyed Ocarina of Time, and other Zelda games, and understand exactly why they're almost universally praised. I can say the same thing about Chrono Trigger. If we're going to talk classics that didn't quite work for me, I'm going to have to give that honor to Final Fantasy VII. I don't think it's a terrible game, but I don't see why it's considered to be one of the greatest games of all time. I mean, it's huge for people to make a claim like that. I have discovered for myself why OoT and CT are praised by many, but I just don't feel the same way about FFVII.

Halo. That is all. Ok, I could probably list most mainstream titles, since I rarely have the same love for them as the majority of people out there. I actually don't even hate Halo. I just find it to be a mediocre fps series that is everything I dislike about the genre at this point. It certainly isn't the second coming of Christ in videogame form, and I will never sell my soul to MS.

While I totally agree for Halo 2 and beyond, I find a lot of younger gamers lack a bit of perspective here. When Halo came out, it was flat out amazing. It took the series in a more open-world direction (not totally, but the levels were HUGE at the time), had an excellent difficulty curve, have the best multiplayer, for both co-op and deathmatch, and give the world a grenade button (Do NOT underestimate this. Before Halo, we had to switch to grenades as a separate weapon, throw it with %$&*ing terrible accuracy using a reticle aim for an arc attack, switch back to our other weapon, and start firing again. It was much worse than it sounds), It also provided us with amazing mini-games, like "Let's see where we can fit the Warthog today!" and "Grenade Tag Elevator Duel". Co op was ridiculous fun. Also, Halo was one of the first to introduce tactical action to a straight up run & gun FPS, and along with Call of Duty 1, added enough NPCs to an area to make the action seem like a real battle, and those NPCs actually had pretty good AI for their day. After playing over-the-top Doom clones like Serious Sam and Painkiller for a decade, Halo was refreshing!

That said, it was certainly not perfect. The storyline was... okay. The graphics have not aged well, and later games have taken Halo's advances to a whole new level. Fallout, for example, puts the large missions of Halo to shame. Every game (except Vanilla Fallout) uses the grenade button, and most use combat ally NPCs. By far, however, Halo's biggest problem wasn't a problem with the game itself, but with the series of unimaginative sequels and spin-offs that came after. Nobody remembers the awesomeness of the original anymore.

BTW, you're right on the money with Assassin's Creed. WAY overrated, even the later ones. Two was pretty good, though.

Personally, I'd say my personal overrated games right now are FFVII & VIII. I still enjoy them, yeah, but going back as a grown up, they have some of the most insane, nonsensical storylines I've ever seen. It was like everybody involved was tripping out or something.

Every RPG made by Square: Just..... aaaaaaaaaaagh. If you've ever heard of Spoony, his various series on Final Fantasy are the best possible explanation as to just why I hate Square and their games. Just... argh. So..... awful..... story too stupid.... cannot compute.... and the worst part of it is that Square is one of those "too damn big" ones, that ends up influencing the entire damn genre with their crap. As such, I dont play JRPGs whatsoever. They end up ALL seeming that way lately.

Spoony himself like the old Final fantasy games, you should not judge the whole franchise on the recent games while the franchise undergo a spectacular decline. Maybe you should try Final Fantasy VI, which is compelling from beginning to end. Also, Ninokuni is very different from recent Final Fantasy.

Ahhh, forgive me, I should have specified a bit more here.

I actually enjoy the older ones in the series (to a point)... Square used to be quite different, really. Generally when I talk of FF in a complainy way, I'm speaking of all of the recent ones, or recent-ish. I enjoyed the games right up until 10, which was the first one I actively hated. Granted, 8 was pretty damn screwy, and 9 I didnt play, and 7 to me is overrated... but yeah, it's more of the current era of JRPGs that I just dont like. There were a number of good ones back in the PS2 era that I liked, though they were starting to develop certain traits that drive me up the wall, but when the current gen got going that genre just fell apart in my view. And now they're worse than ever. It's current-era Square that bugs me so damn much. Same with alot of other current JRPG devs.

Though I will say that of the older ones 6 is actually my least favorite; ALOT of aspects of the story just bugged the hell outta me. If the game had ended after the midway point, instead of going to the world of ruin, I'd probably like it more, but that second half of the game is when things just got stupid, at least to me. Way, way too many holes in the story start to appear, and somehow the gameplay feels dramatically more repetetive at that point as well (hard to say why). Something in the overall design changes. It's still a good game though, if rather glitch-tastic (though not as glitchy as the first game!) Numbers 1 and 4 remain my faves, and I sure as heck dont mean the remakes of them.

As for something like Ni No Kuni or whatever it's called.... ehhhh. Too little, too late. I originally wanted to give it a try at some point, but.... by now, my interest is utterly dead and I've pretty much stopped using the consoles in favor of the PC.

Atelier Iris 3 was f*cking terrible, compared to the 2nd game in the series... never mind the first one.

I very much enjoyed Atelier Iris, and Atelier Iris 2 was alright I guess..... but because I had played the first two games my boyfriend (now my ex) gave me Atelier Iris 3 for my birthday.

It's terrible, though..... a total cash-cow.... full of boring and seemingly endless fetch quests.
I slogged through the whole game in order not to seem ungrateful as it was a gift, but holy cow that's one game that's certainly never going to be played again.
Ever.

There are more newer 'Atelier' games available now (Atelier Rorona, Atelier Ayesha, and Atelier Meruru) ... but I can't help but regard them with some suspicion, and feel reluctant to buy any of them.

The most overrated game out there in my opinion is Angry Birds. Its basicly just a re-skinned version of Crush The Castle which is a flash game that didn't get anywhere near as much fame. Yet, the creators of Angry Birds plagiarize this game with a bird and pig theme and suddenly its "one of the best games made" That really annoys me.

Meh, 'Crush the Castle' is a knock-off of a previous game called 'Castle Clout', anyway.
The developers got permission from the writer of Castle Clout to make their game, though.

Angry Birds has a different mode of firing the stones/birds, and a selection of different birds to fire... but it is certainly a very similar game to Castle Clout.

I think a large part of their success comes from the sheer variety of different variants of the game which Rovio have made across so many different gaming platforms, combined with the appeal of the graphics and the resultant demand for merchandise relating to the franchise.

Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Super Mario 64, Super Paper Mario, Sonic 1 through 3 & Knuckles, any Call of Duty game, Saints Row 3, and Skyrim all get my vote.

I actually rather enjoyed Dragon Age so I disagree.

On the subject of old computer games, I would like to add Quake to the list, I never really cared for Quake 1, 2 or 4 compared to Doom. Quake III Arena was ok for its time but it was over-rated compared to unreal tournament.

How the hell is Oblivion more overrated then Skyrim?!?!? Have you ever played Oblivion or Morrowind? Skyrim is a Last gen console port, pretty graphically (only for 360 and ps3), considerably stripped gameplay mechanic wise, dumbed down, overhyped upon release, mediocre elder scrolls game. Oblivion was far better then skyrim because it knew what it was... a massively Immersive RPG... Skyrim cant decide whether it wants to be an RPG or a simple button masher in situations...
And I cant cast spells and S/S on skyrim... really bethesda... really?

Also, the level design was a strange exercise in "copy and paste", you'd get lost constantly, even when you're going the right direction. "Haven't I been here already?"

And once you get to The Flood, you might as well stop playing because it's all downhill from there =|

While I agree that a lot of MMORPG suck story wise (you can almost never truly progress because it has to accommodate for everyone playing) Some games such as RuneScape and World of Warcraft have taken steps to get past this through phasing. Runescape however is not worth it anymore (to me at least) since the staff got greedy and removed Free to Play from the highscores (which effectively says "you do not exist unless you pay $8 a month"). WOW is considered overrated by many I can understand that but to me It's fun. Its a great game, its just the community that is dreadful.

8O This is absolutely true !
The level design is just bizarre.
Even if you don't consider the generic copy-paste nature of the actual layout of each building, given the number of times I saw the exact same pattern of exploded alien on the wall and got confused about where I was, it isn't even funny.

Most overrated?

I'd have to go with the average Call of Duty games.

In response to others - I actually think GTA IV deserves a lot of the praise it gets, as it was quite fun when I played it.

And @LadyWoofWoof

Atelier Totori is the best of the new trilogy - if you want to get back in the series, that's a good place to start. I liked it, although it was too hard for me to beat xD

That being said, I'd agree somewhat with Final Fantasy VII, @least in our time period, its not as effective storytelling.

Also, Call of Duty post-MW2
