A lot of the "hardcore" or "competitive" games that I play nowadays are pretty much this. These are namely Dota 2/LoL and DayZ. I find all these games to be very enjoyable to play despite the potential toxicity of the human element. Specifically talking about MOBAs/Dota-clones, there are few multiplayer games that can match the depth and the teamwork in that genre and overall they have phenomenal game design and balancing, in my opinion. I guess they aren't for everyone though, and to be frank, I probably have a very unique upbringing when it comes to online games. When I was in my pre-teens, Xbox LIVE was really gaining a lot of popularity and at the ripe age of ten, I was playing games like MechAssault and Halo 2 online on my my original Xbox, bitching constantly about the last time that I died or whatever and explaining to people that f*****g my mother would make them a necrophiliac and that I was not, in fact, a girl. I had basically no real social life during junior high and high school and it consisted almost entirely of interactions over Xbox LIVE; I am more than capable of being in a social environment where raging and shit-talking and flippancy (e.i. trolling) are the norms without it ruining my fun.

FFVIII got a bad rap because of "The Spoony One," a video maker for the website That Guy With The Glasses. He's an especially popular guy, and hated FFVIII and FFX. So, when he gave it several lengthy videos worth of hate, people started spreading that around. It's as if no one has an opinion of their own, and just adopted his, like propaganda.

As for me, I'm having trouble coming up with any games that get me singled out in the elitist gaming community. Maybe games like The Sims, though I never play them anymore. Or Dynasty Warriors.

If not those, then the fact that I play Maplestory every now and then has to single me out.

I like FFVIII, but I think it's kinda complicated why it's seen as the "bad" FF.

You really have to split the final fantasy games, because comparing outside of these groups doesn't make sense.

FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV, FFV, FFVI (one can argue FFI to FFIII, different from FFIV to FFVI)
FFVII to FFX
FFX-2, FF Tactics, etc..
FFs from FFXII and on

So for FFVIII, it's almost never rated as a standalone game. If Final Fantasy 8 was a standalone title, it would be a 5/5. But unfortunately, it's compared between FF8 to FF10.

FF7 -> This is obviously the most popular and arguably number one FF. Even by people who don't like it!
FF9 -> Final Fantasy 9 is highly underrated. It's not the best though.
FF10 -> This was a blockbuster game.

So that leaves FF8 and FF9. Unfortunately, FF8 happened to be the follow up sequel to Final Fantasy 7. So expectations were impossibly high.

Meaning FFVIII is the game everybody hates.

I've never compared FF games these ways, but I do know that was the order they had to be released in order to meet the switch from PS1 to PS2. I just get disappointed cause people like to give it crap for the magic and summoning systems, when those a**holes just didn't understand that it was meant to incorporate story-changing elements based on the way you personally played the game, leveled your character, and what characters got what summons in the game. I'd like to see that today in a video game, where the story isn't so much affected by individual choices or dialogue options, but rather how the player chooses to play out the game

Hmmm, makes sense.

I think that's what they were shooting for with Final Fantasy X-2, the spin off. What do you think?

I like the games with motion controls, although I can understand why they're not popular. I also dislike the hipster mentality that a console sucks if casual gamers play on it.
In terms of games I liked "scooby doo: night of 1000 frights" but that's more nolstalgia than anything

I like some motion control games ( Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Excite Truck, ExciteBots, Dance Central, DDR ) but for games like Zelda, Okami, Mario, Ratchet & Clank etc they don't feel right without traditional controls. And keep in mind some people have limited motion in their arms and/or legs, making motion controls impossible or at least insanely difficult. Same for touch controls.

This, and it's expansions. It has a hellish learning curve, but once you get it, it's so rewarding. I spent every spare minute for over two years playing the same game.

X3: Albion Prelude is still a great game. I just don't have the time to live in that game right now... Heh, I guess I'm a bit more obsessed about this than I remembered.

If I'm catching your meaning right, that's done pretty often in games, actually.

....but not on consoles. I cant remember the last time I saw one on those that did that. Not that I bother with the damn things much though.
