it only takes a few minutes. it is a VERY easy game - mostly a "choose your own story" type adventure. But the language is very straightforward - there is no subtlety :)

http://enterthestory.com/test/

I plan to send it for reviews in a day or so, but I want to make sure there are no weak of strange or broken parts. Is it fun? Is it easy to follow? Is there anything I should change?

My plan is to adapt a new classic novel every week (once the game goes live). You decide what the person does. And if you want to change stories, just click on the books. To start with I have Journey to The Centre of the Earth and The Picture of Dorian Gray, and will soon add Th First Men In The Moon, Romeo & Juliet, and the Wizard of Oz.

If you get to a part where it say enter a code the PM me and I'll give you a code so you can play the whole story. But I'm going to bed now, so if you do need a code It will be few hours before I can respond.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I can tell it is a good game. However I dont like that I have to wait till tomorrow to play again as Chapter one was kinda short. But besides that it looks good.

That was quick! I just PM-ed you (from bed!)

Although the front page story only has one free chapter, if you go to the library, the first half of The Picture of Dorian Gray is free. And of course, the code unlocks everything. Or should do.

Not to bad, but when you:

leave for GF, tell her about paper, go to uncles, then go back to GF to arrange rocks the wording does not make sense since it assumed you had not left for your uncles, as it is an option before and after I assume it was an oversight.

Also I think you should remove the day to day thing since you are in a testing period.

Thanks for finding that, I'll get it fixed.

re: the testing period, I need to make sure the daily restriction code works. The password code was the hardest part to make, and the most likely to go wrong, so I need to know that it works for other people. But I've sent you a password - I hope you want to go further. Thanks for taking a look.

thanks for the code, I did not use it yet to help you with the daily restriction programming. When do the days reset? you should tell the person at the end of the chapter the exact time it resets. That way I know if its 24 hours from the completion time or if i can start at 11:00pm and then start another chapter at 12:01 am.

Also is the time restriction cookie based or IP based? I was thinking of using the code on a different PC, but the same network, do you have a way of telling what pc owns the code?

You can log in on multiple computers simultaneously if you wish. The content restriction code is pretty simple. The server associates your code with your name and password. Whenever you click on a chapter, if it is past the current day (or for other games, past half way) it checks on the server. Also, codes are only checked when playing on the EnterTheStory domain. If someone saves a game elsewhere then the code assumes that thy have paid for it, so does not check anything.

I am sure this is all very easy to hack. And the codes are only 5 characters long! But I try to make the games simple enough, and updated often enough, and cheap enough, that a pirated version would cost more than a new one (assuming that a player's time is worth anything).

Regarding time restriction, the "updated daily" feature does not work in the test version, because it relies on me physically uploading content each week, and changing the chapter number each day (probably late at night, Scotland time). There is nothing to go wrong there.

Thanks again for looking.

it is not very good in my opinion. all variations of answers lead to only 2 inevitable outcomes.
either the girl thinks you are a wimp, or you discover a secret code that makes you "the man"

more work on variable outcomes would be good.
rome was not built in one day.

True, but Rome is often visited in a day.

You make an important point though. The game works best if you only follow one path, then it isn't obvious that the other paths all lead to the same place. When there is only one chapter then obviously people will play it more than once and see its limits. But if there are many chapters then people only play them once, and get more enjoyment. Perhaps I should only update the site once per week, so everyone plays multiple chapters at once? What do you think?
