OK, so I was finally able to install KOTOR II on my computer, RIGHT? WELL in the tutorial, I am playing as the droid, right? SO I get up to the point where I get a pistol from a container & I release these sphere-like probes & I am supposed to shoot at them, RIGHT? WELL, one would think that equipping the pistol is as easy as pie, right? Well, not for me!! ! I can't for the life of me, figure out how to equip that pistol! I mean, I read the instructions carefully: "Go to the equip menu by clicking the blaster icon or pressing the U key", right???? BUT the game just will NOT, repeat, WILL NOT let me switch from the arm thing to that pistol! Seriously???? Really???? You're gonna tell me that I cannot accomplish such a simple task as changing a silly weapon in a tutorial???? Seriously???? Really???? UNBELIEVABLE!! !! SO any help, or what? Please? AND as you can see in THIS post, I am STILL having trouble w/ KOTOR 1! I really do NOT understand why I am having so much trouble w/ this, when NOBODY else does!! !!

If by arm thing you mean the droid shock arm, that one is in a different slot than where the pistols go. You should press U and click on the slot below the droid shock arm and to the right of "config 1". Then you should be able to equip the pistol.

Another pro-tip for this game: listen and talk to your companions. A large part of the game is about finding out what happened and what your companions were up to during the war.

There is also the restoration mod (The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod) that adds quite a bit to the game. The last part of the development of kotor2 was rushed and a lot got cut. You need to start a new game for this mod to work though.

Can't help with kotor1, my new computer can't run it. Strangely 2 works fine.

Thanks. I didn't even save a game, so I would have no problems starting a new one. Also another problem is, I cannot get the cheats to work! I am supposed to type "Enablecheats =1" on the ini file! Only my problem is, when I tried to originally, it would not let me save the ini! I had copied the original to my desktop & I typed it there & replaced it, & that saved fine! HOWEVER, when I am in the game, the cheats do NOT work! It is as if I had NEVER EVER typed it! Frustrating, you know?

Is kotor2 installed in the C:\Program Files (x86)\blahblah map? That is probably the default location. The newer versions of Windows OS have a tendency of not wanting users to mess about with files in that map. I always install games in another map. C:\Games\kotor2 or something.
I wouldn't worry about cheats though. The combat in this game isn't that difficult (easer than kotor1 in my opinion) and it will get easier as you level up and upgrade your weapons at a workbench. In my last game almost everything and everyone died in 1 round because of the upgraded lightsaber and force speed. Just save often in new slots in the early game.

Thanks, I will try a different map!

I have no idea, I never had that error. Googling words from the error message might turn up a solution.
Did you uninstall and reinstall or just move the game folder around?
Sometimes running a game in windows xp compatibility mode works.

Otherwise just uninstall again and reinstall to Program Files (x86) and live without the cheats? Another option could be installing it to Program Files (x86) and then copying the game folder to another location and launch the game from there (possibly in compatibility mode).

I have no idea really what the problem is here. Somehow kotor2 runs fine here (only in windowed mode though), but kotor1 doesn't.

I uninstalled/reinstalled, which it looks like I shall have to do again, using ur suggestion of doing it in PF (x86) & copying it, & running from the copy. What is "compatibility mode"? At least you can run urs in window mode. I cannot on mine.

When you right-click on a shortcut or a .exe and choose properties there is a Compatibility tab. In there is an option to select compatibility mode for for example Windows xp.
I think I selected windowed mode from inside the game.

Does compatibility have to do w/ "Run as Administrator"?

Ok, thanks, I think I got the game to work--cheats & all, I just had to redownload that missing dll file, or w/e.

I love the kotor games, they're pretty great. It seems like I finally got cheats to work on kotor 2, it took me a while to figure it out (and I have it on Steam). Seems like you can't actually see the text writing out as you type it, so you kind of have to assume you're spelling it correctly.
