After moving house and deciding to leave behind both my 3DS XL and PS4 for my niece to play, I am now looking for a new console to buy.

Right now my two main options are a PS4 (again) and an Xbox One, but of course there are many other consoles to choose from. Though I do seem to become rather bored with handheld devices very quickly.

Any recommendations? :D

I don't know, did you like the PS4? If you did, you might as well get another as the Xbox One has a similar library with a few different exclusives(You could look into the exclusives and see if they look more appealing to you), yet slightly less the third party selection that the PS4 has(strangely, it seems to even miss out on some that make it to PC). If you have any interest in fighting games, too, almost all of them are available on the PS4, while not so many have made it to the Xbox One.

I have a PS4, largely, for it's Japanese developed exclusives(including japanese exclusive imports... PS3, PS4, and Xbox One aren't region locked). Being able to screen capture just about anything, and save gameplay footage, is something I've found to be a bonus as well... more for reference though(like going back and checking something I forgot to pay notice instead of going back to check it in game, or being able to pause and look up the meaning within scrolling japanese text). My only negative feeling, is that the stock hard drive is too small for the pushed trend of buying games digitally, and I have a 1TB(limited run console) model(860GB because it needs a fair bit of space to run it's interface I guess), so I can only imagine the annoyance of having to manage 360GB free space of a 500GB model when many games are easily 50GB downloads anymore.

If I lost all of my stuff, and had to choose again, I'd likely still choose the PS4(don't have a gaming PC), but if I could choose a second I'd probably look into getting a wii u or wait for Nintendo's new home console.

I'm not sure where you're getting "many" other consoles to choose from, since there's only 3 (unless you want older ones for some reason) and two of them are astonishingly similar to each other.

If you want something that's actually DIFFERENT, you'll have to go with a Wii U, or do PC gaming.

The XBox One is basically the PS4 with a very, very few games that are different (like Halo) and then some games that simply dont appear on it. Other than that, it's mostly just a different interface. I personally have not heard good things about it. But the PS4 is... is.... functional, I guess. If you liked that, why not just get another one? There really isnt much else now aside from Nintendo's machine (which is the only one that I personally would buy).

Sorry, I should have been more clear. By using the term "many" I wasn't strictly referring to contemporary gaming.

Thank you all for the advice. :D

I don't know what types of games you like, but I honestly feel most consoles have their fair share of great games. I personally prefer buying old physical copies of games- I don't go the illegal emulation route. Sometimes I'll buy digital versions if it got a port, remake or remaster. Steam on PC has a huge amount of classics from Sega and more, as does most modern consoles and handhelds.

My favorite console is probably the Super NES or PlayStation 2. So many great games on both.

Ahhh, I see.

That's pretty rare, honestly. Usually when I see someone talking about consoles... I assume they dont even know the old ones exist. I'm always very surprised when someone actually plays/likes the older ones.

But if you're talking about even the old ones, well... then yes, there's about 5 squillion choices.

But what are your preferences when it comes to gaming? That'd help us recommend things.

My favourite genre(S) of games are action/adventure, RPGs and platformers. I am tempted to dust off my archaic N64 as I can't really afford to spend £200-£300 on a PS4.

The console you choose should be based on what games you want to play

N64 could look pretty horrible on a non CRT TV like LCD

Yes defiantly base it on games you like then.

PS2 might be an option lots of good games on there and it plays PS1 games as well.

Get a PlayStation 2 (the version that plays PlayStation games as well). Plenty of great games on PS1 and PS2. For RPGs.. I highly recommend: Star Ocean 3, Mana Khemia, Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud, Dark Cloud 2, Azure Dreams to name a few.

Nintendo 64 was pretty good too, just not a huge amount of rpgs.

N64 sadly didnt have a huge amount of anything at all.

Small selection, that. I mostly remember it for Blast Corps myself. Ah, the days when Rare was a great developer...

N64 ,Ps1 , PS2 and Xbox probably needs a CRT tv

Xbox 360 , Xbox one, ps3, ps4 need at least a LCD tv and perhaps the Wii as well

If I'm wrong correct me

Most TV's have scart and component and HDMI can get a Component conversion cable.

You can connect most older consoles via component cables you don't have to connect them all. Some TV's aerial tuners still support analogue as well. But there are converters for analogue to hdmi available cost a bit though.

I have my PS2 connected VIA component to my 3D LED TV. (PS1 works as well)
