My theory regarding Saddam, is that if the Iraq war never happened, he would have likely been overthrown during the Arab Spring.

Baathism is a form of the same pan-Arab Socialist Nationalism that was espoused by the other leaders that fell at the time (Mubarak, Gadhafi, et al). Aside from the monarchies, only Lebanon, Mauritania and Sudan did not espouse pan-Arabism. Bashar al-Assad is the only Arab nationalist still in power.

Weren’t the Taliban and Mujahideen nurtured by the US intelligence against the Soviets too?

How much of Syria does Assad actually rule anymore?

Had the impression that Syria was split up between a dozen waring factions. Each with its own territory. And that he was like each of the others, and just controlled one tiny part of the country.

I suppose with both ISIL and with Kurds crushed he might have regained more territory.

Sad thing is that that may all go down the tubes now when Kabul falls to the Taliban again (like Saigon fell a couple of years after we left).

There's oil, too. The US were backing a pipeline project in the South. I'm guessing that will be destroyed on the way out, so the Taliban can't benefit from it? But in the meantime someone made some money off the build.

The Taliban and Mujahideen did not directly attack the U.S. The hijackers were not Afghans.

What Americans can’t admit is that we work for the Saudis not the other way around.

Would it have been better if the US didn't go into Afghanistan at all, or do a large number of Americans think that Al Quaida still deserved it for 9/11?
