I'm surprised nobody has already made a thread about this.

The U.S. Supreme Court had a hearing a couple days ago on Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion nationwide. Given the court's conservative tilt, there's a very real possibility that they will overturn Roe and leave the issue of abortion back up to the states, which would end legal abortion in up to half of the states.

I read a few legal analyses on the hearing. Justice Coney Barrett asked what the implications for other landmark cases such as the marriage equality and contraceptives ones would be if Roe were overturned. Justice Kavanaugh likened Roe to Plessy v. Ferguson, the case that established racial segregation and the "separate but equal" doctrine.

I am very concerned and disheartened that half of the population could lose their basic human rights to bodily autonomy by next summer. I am furthermore concerned, as a member of the LGBT community, that overturning Roe could put other civil rights cases such as the ones that legalized marriage equality and struck down sodomy laws in jeopardy. I know the left has been very doom and gloom since the hearings, but I wouldn't mind hearing something at least slightly optimistic, if at all possible.

You're probably going to lose Roe, but I don't think it will go much further than that, even RGB thought Roe was bad law when it was decided, and it's only hung in this long through stare decisis, throwing the issue back to the states is likely to be good in the long run.

i'm always surprised there's no other way of birth control in the usa??
i feel men have a BIG interest in keeping the abortion option "alive"
(i know also cons make the point of it being a womans prefered choice, but its most often physically/mentally coerced imho
-- also i'm pro-choice, but there's bad acting going on for too long)
all the new ways of oppression in the name of liberation, ty 8)

Why do you think leaving the issue to the states is better in the long run?

This is what happens when you let men have opinions about abortion. They form the entire opposition.

No uterus, no opinion, unless you’re in favor of abortion.

The only acceptable option: Unrestricted, on-demand, without apology, completely taxpayer-funded, and completely available during the third trimester. Anything else is sexist.

We’re not even Texas anymore, we’re Abbottistan

Oh look, Tim being completely wrong again.

https://www.pewforum.org/fact-sheet/pub ... -abortion/

It gets more granular, but the tl;dr is 37% of women want a complete ban, and that's just for the most extreme position.

It's been festering for close to 50 years now because the Supreme Court swooped in and invented a right that wasn't actually in the Constitution, when it should have been a narrow ruling and been allowed to play out in state law. It's been legally precarious all these years because of the tenuous law it was based on, and so if Roe falls and the states are allowed to do what they want, Federalism will be allowed to work, people may move based on it, and if enough people think it's important enough, we might someday get an actual amendment properly protecting abortion, or not, but it's not going to be the quick fix bandaid on a bullet hole that Roe was.

My sentiments exactly. If a couple is having non-Missionary sex in their own apartment, and they accidentally make too much noise, they are completely at the mercy of a potential “Karen”. Next thing you know, the cops (who are nothing more than state-sponsored terrorists as it is) are busting down the couple’s door. And that’s if they’re married. Unmarried couples wouldn’t be allowed to live together at all, if the conservatives have their way.

Fornication shouldn’t be illegal. If anything, it should be mandatory.

And with voter suppression and gerrymandering, the only way to liberate a state like Texas would be groups like Antifa, BLM, and La Raza Unida doing a 1/6-style siege of the state capitol.

if i lived there, i'd leave with the shirt on my back and nothing else. homelessness i've experienced before and it would still be better for a non-financially talented person than to live there.

If you performed a post-6-week abortion in Texas and chanted “Hell no, I won’t pay!” (the $10,000 bounty), Abbott would sic his storm troopers so fast your head would spin. And if you refuse to pay the bounty, off to jail you go.

He won’t allow civil disobedience.

My civil disobedient act would involve violating another one of his hallmark laws: sending an unsolicited dick pic…to his wife.

Why harass her? He's the problem.
