I'm not sure about whether I believe in God or not. I feel like I want to because you know otherwise when I die there's likely gonna be nothing and the thought of just dying and there's nothing else scares me honestly. But then I also look at the world and see how things are, like kids being abused and people dying of hunger etc and I struggle to see and believe that the guy who made it all just sits and lets it happen. I think of my mum, she got ill mentally and jumped in to a busy road and was killed. God didn't stop her jumping and he didn't stop the car that struck her, so given that and the other horrible things that happens I don't really believe anymore.

Your thoughts guys?

Although knowing one is dying may well deeply disturb and frighten almost anyone, atheist and believers alike, once you're dead, if there's nothing left of "you" at that point, there can by definition be no fear left.

Assuming one dies in one's sleep, then it's simply a matter of falling into a deep sleep, then never waking up. That seems like a seamless and painless transition into nothingness, to me, anyway.

“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

I see no reason to believe in gods, personally. I don't believe in faeries or trolls either.

I believe in God, if i didn't i would commit suicide long ago. Dying doesn't scare me as much as going to hell.

As for the horrible things that happen, i believe this life wasn't made to be enjoyed as a perfect paradise, more like a trial people have to pass.

I have to say, as an atheist, that if your belief truly kept you here with us, then I must say "Thank you, God!".

But also, "Damn you, God, for creating an existence where fear of eternal punishment drives some people's actions in both positive and very negative ways".

As a kind of allegory then I can see how its possible to believe in something called a 'god'.

Though I suspect that most believe in it in relation to supernatural being.

I am not aware of any empirical evidence to support the existance of a one god as proposed by the abrahamic religions or multiple ones as defined by the polytheistic.

For this reason and the fact that I am unable to accept this as a reasonable proposition I have no personal belief.

I have no negative views in relation to those that do - provided they do not try to involve me in their religious activities.

You should watch it too. To be fair, even most Christians don't really have a good understanding of what the Bible actually says about Hell. Many of us live in fear of Hell, when we don't actually need to. Technically, Atheists don't either as you too can leave Hell at any time. Any decision to stay there is your own.

Interesting. My knowledge of the finer points of theology is indeed, sorely lacking.

I tend to be dismissive of the benefits of belief, with the simple admonition that "you can find those same benefits in a secular framework of thought, without the burdens of rigid dogma and supernatural baggage", despite recognizing that objectively positive messages can and often have been inserted into the dogma of many religions, just in a form that I find needlessly burdened with the padding.

there's an ancient roman text by a certain Lucretius, de rerum natura - on the nature of things. Though roman, it's based on even older Greek texts. It describes a world without god, where everything is made of atoms, and it describes how atoms form ever more complex configurations. It describes how simple life forms became more complex life, how humans evolved from cave people into civilized Greeks - it's interesting. From the standpoint of the author, it's all speculation, but he was bang on, although his version was very simplified.

the poem is possibly a fragment, no one knows, only two copies survived into modern times. But it ends rather bleakly, describing the plague in ancient Athens, and family members fighting over wood to burn their deceased. And there it just ends, very unceremoniously.

regarding hell, however, that might still be a net positive...

As werner herzog put it: the universe knows no smile, and we should be grateful for that.

No I don't think there are any real deities or magical beings, no cosmic plan, no immortal soul, no particular designed purpose for the human race or anything else. I think a person's life is about whatever they decide it's about. It can't be proved or disproved definitively, but from what I've seen of things I reckon the balance of probabilities is very strongly against the existence of deities. So much so that if my life depended on guessing the correct answer to the question "is there literally a god?" then I'd have to guess that there isn't, because I don't want to die.

We're possibly the only species that can anticipate our own death. So I'm not surprised that people have believed there to be an afterlife for so long. It must be a great comfort to think that you've scored enough good behaviour points to earn a happy post-life experience, that you won't cease to exist, but it's not a belief I can honestly hold. And not existing isn't painful. All I can hope for about my death is that it won't be for a while yet and that when it happens I won't know anything about it. Though it's a great shame that after decades of refining and enhancing your wisdom and strengths, in the end it all just rots away into nothing, and our fight against chaos ultimately fails.

We are the Universe.

Or to be specific a small fragment of it. Though some say the Universe, maybe holographic, so like a hologram, the fragment contains the whole.

If the totality of the Universe = God . God = Totality. We are then fragment of Totality. I guess thats what "made in the image and likeness means."

Is the Universe Real? Universe is manifestation of existence that we perceive, through our sense perception. In that sense, it is as real as you can get.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: In my opinion if "God" was real there would've been something sure to prove it. There is nothing, only things that people can claim are because of "God", but that is only superstition.

I have believed in God since I was old enough to feel. I've always had a deep connection that came from inside, meaning it wasn't taught to me.

I've never been alone because of this. I've had confirmation multiple times that completely surprised me.

This gives me comfort but most of all, purpose, responsibility to be the best person I can. The reason for this is that God gives free-will.

God is the only thing in my life that has never caused me pain. I do not blame him for the actions of the world.

I'm curious as to what the Bible says about the Norse underworld too.
