Very often people are talking bad about black people or Middle Eastern people and they don't think it's a big deal if they say things in front of me. I'M PART BLACK! AND I'M MIDDLE EASTERN! They just expect I'm white because I'm pale. I live where if you're Middle Eastern, it doesn't matter to them which country you're from, Rednecks will think you're a terrorist. So since I'm pale I get out of this, but for some reason sometimes both me and my mom are confuzed as being HISPANIC (?) Middle Eastern people don't look the same as Hispanic people, but since I live where there is a lot of idiots, if they hate Hispanic people they're going to hate me. My family came from Sicily, but before then they lived in Iran, so I'm NOT Hispanic. Does anyone else have problems like this?

It goes the other way too, don't feel like your alone. I wonder how many people make fun of Jews in front of Jews that look Caucasian? When I was little I remember arguing that Wennie Cooper from the TV show, The Wonder Years, was Asian to my classmates, even though she is Portuguese. :)

I'm reminded of a story told by a prominent Poet ( forget his name) who used to appear on PBS news regularly as a commentator.

He happens to be a Native American of the Salish tribe of coastal northern California.

He mentioned that "there's a certain class of young males who yell at anyone with brown skin" and that one day when he was walking down the street a group of them yelled at him "why don't you go back where you CAME from!?"

He said that he "doubled over laughing", and that "it wasnt a 'hate crime', but I crime of irony."

Even being an almost completely white, mostly male (lol :p)... because of the way I was raised... it makes me cringe when people get into race discussions at all if there aren't any obviously racially diverse people around.

The problem is not the blatant racism that I would be willing to confront... the problem is the subtle stuff... People who blame their short comings in business on affirmative action in companies with primarily white male executives... How do you confront something like that without sounding like you are literally attacking someone in a very personal way.

Usually this sort of thing is very overloading on me stress wise... and the other night I was actually stuck in this sort of conversation and just wanted to explode. It was worse than being in a crowded grocery store with the hum of a crowd near christmas time.

oh well... I survived...

"I predict in a few decades latino will not even be a category. "

Isn't that a category in the American Census? As European? The same as African-American? The latter of which has been around for longer than "a few decades"? <.<

Also, it's Cameron* Diaz. <,<

Calling Latinos a race is about as logical as calling Anglophones a race. In other words not logical at all.

So you're saying you support the "one drop" dogma about race?

It turns out that some infinitesimal amount of my DNA is moorish. At least that's what the genealogy suggests.

(I should clarify - very old documents from Devon are written such that there is a figure in one document who is identified as a moorish slave of an ancestor, and in a later document as the husband of a later ancestor)

Ugh. Sucks that you have to experience this. But on the flipside, it's an opportunity for you to turn these people's crappy behaviors and perceptions inside out. "Those people you're generalizing about? I'm one. HOW 'BOUT NOW, a**hole?!?"

:D

The Irish are a nationality and an ethnic group. They are not a race. Being Irish is not genetically inherited.

It is transmitted by nurture, not nature.
