I signed the petition (for whatever that's worth).

It might help if someone could post a history of the whole thing. I saw a video on it a while ago, but have forgotten the details. Mostly I recall it was pretty outrageous; it was initiated by some Americans who went down there because they knew there was a (new?) government and knew that they could slip their anti-gay ideas into the minds of the politically-naive Ugandan lawmakers. That was my take, anyway.

{gross-out spoiler}

I.e. They (the Americans) apparently showed a film & had lots of discussion of gay sh*t-eating (literally) sex, for example. I don't really know if that's common among gay men, but I'm going to guess that it probably isn't.

My point about the Ugandans being "naive" is that if that's all they know about "gay," then it's not hard to see how they would be against it. It would be like asking Bin Laden about America -- probably not going to get a good idea about it if that is your only source.

The bills was conceived by Ugandans, not Americans. Besides, this is more of a religious issue to Americans than a political one, so blame the evangelicals that went to Uganda, and not the Senators that stayed home.

While I generally reject interventionism (mainly the military variety, as it tends to have very hypocritical motivations quite often), stupid statements like these are why I hate isolationists. This is a legitimate problem for everyone everywhere, the fact that gays may be massacred in Uganda is not just "the Ugandans business", and various diplomatic organizations and NGOs need to use any pull they have (including threats of cutting off financial assistance or embargos) to oppose this depraved bill.

Second installment. Notice how, quite like American-grown Christofascists, this prick completely evades the whole "death penalty" issue and concentrates on "defending the family".

Rachel Maddow should have compared that reactionary to Idi Amin

Can we execute bigots? On the first offense?

Hey. Is Uganda the same country of the "eat the poo-poo" brilliance?

It's sad that this persecution still exists today. Unfortunately Uganda isn't unique in this regard. There are many countries in the world, a few in our own hemisphere actually, where homosexuality is punishable with imprisonment. I suspect the motivation behind what they're doing in Uganda is because of Africa's desperate struggle with the AIDS epidemic. Hopefully, at the very least, they'll scratch the death penalty out of their bill.

A while ago in the majority Muslim country of Albania one party (which had a plurality of seats) proposed a bill that would legalize Same-Sex Marriage.

I don't know if I'd call Albania a Muslim country. Religion has only been legal since the collapse of their communist regime 20 years ago. They're probably more secular the US is.

I don't know what can be done to besides condemnation. I don't support intervention in other countries domestic affairs obviously and also; the problem with sanctions, embargoes, or cutting off humanitarian aid is that it wouldn't be doled out fairly. Saudi Arabia's human rights record is one of the worst in the world and nobody is sanctioning them any time soon.

I don't mean Albania's State Religion is Islam, I mean that most of its population is Muslim (70%, to be more precise).

Another nice thing in that bills is the "snitch provision." Not reporting gay people to the authorities is also made illegal. And if you are convicted of that twice, you are executed.

The idea there seems to aimed at school teachers, managers, or other people who are "in charge" of others, though it seems wide enough to apply to anyone (i.e. neighbors).

(the formatting below is lousy -- it's a lot easier to read on the page at the link)

http://wakingupnow.com/blog/uganda-wors ... we-thought

Quote:
Quote:
* People who commit “aggravated homosexuality” are subject to death.
* Aggravated homosexuality includes all “serial offenders.”
* “Serial offender” means a person with prior convictions of homosexuality or related offenses, including
Quote:
* Suggesting that someone have gay sex
* Trying to enter into a same-sex marriage
* Knowing someone had gay sex – or committed any other offence in the law – and not reporting that person to the authorities within 24 hours.

Stop and ponder that. You don’t even have to be gay or have gay sex to be executed for aggravated homosexuality. And we can get even crazier, because the law says you yourself are guilty if you don’t turn in anyone who refuses to be a snitch. That means:

Quote:
If you discovered that a friend found out someone had gay sex and didn’t turn them in, and you didn’t turn in your friend for refusing to snitch, that’s strike one against you. And then if you didn’t turn in another friend for refusing to snitch, that would be strike two. You’re dead.

And if you told a friend about each of those instance and your friend didn’t turn you in either time, then he’s dead, too, for his repeated refusal to snitch on your refusal to snitch on your friend’s refusal to snitch on someone who had gay sex.

The already mentioned American evangelical group known as the Family is made up largely of federal law makers in the congress and senate, and believe that Christianity had gotten it wrong for the last 2,000 years. Rather than God being the savior of the meek and poor, they believe the rich and powerful must be courted, as God had shown his blessings on them by making them rich and powerful. Also, they believe these blessed rich and powerful are exempt from the morality governing the rest of us; on the contrary, they believe the rich and powerful are privileged in doing bad and hurtful things. It's no wonder that John Ensign and that governor who went hiking the Appalachian trail when he visited his Brazilian girlfriend were both members, along with many other far right conservatives.

Good catch Bethie. The "eat the poo poo" thing is a lot more disturbing when you look at in this context. I thought this was more motivated as a reaction to the AIDS epidemic but there seems to be quite a bit of religious fervor behind it.

Link to the text of the bill --> link

Note the familiar American political rhetoric in the wording and phraseology.

I'm not sure I understand the comment, but in the USA we have very sophisticated rhetoric and ideologies build up around prejudice that have been built-up and refined over decades (centuries?). We are experts at it (and should be, given the foundations and history of the country).

In some places they may really not have much of an idea of what "gay" means. That makes those places ripe for having people from here transplant our "advanced" bigotry there, because those societies haven't had gone though the stages of argumentation, rhetoric & political struggle that would give them some "immunity," -- some ability to argue against the "advanced" anti-gay rhetoric.

IOW, like a virus that evolves as it fights the immune system as it also changes, there is a process that eventually results in some equilibrium. But, a population that didn't get to evolve that immunity is vulnerable to that virus running rampant if it is introduced.

So, when Senator Santorum (it wasn't him, but it was someone like him) shows up with some weird videos, and a lot of lies -- bingo -- "gay" means something really bad that obviously needs to be made illegal. They are, in a sense, defenseless from such stuff (and The Family and friends know that).

Oh, and AIDS is primarily a heterosexual issue in Africa.

Define bigot.

I would have been executed a long time ago if that was the case. And so would you, with your far-left, vegetarian (or vegan) eating ways.

A bigot rarely knows they're being a bigot.

David Bahati was educated at the University of Cardiff, of all places. I'm sure they're dead chuffed at how one of their more famous former students turned out.

There was a documentary shown on BBC Three, I think, last year about this issue. I'll see if I can find the show:

A bigot is an obstinately-intolerant and/or prejudiced individual.
A non-moderate position on a binary left/right political spectrum is not bigotry,
nor is a diet. (Not that veganism is remotely synonymous with an "eating way" or diet, but whatevs.)
I think you're confused.

I agree that those who espouse bigotry would never call it such themselves.

Personal perception.

Bigotry is usually in the eye of the beholder. Doesn't help that opponents have had the 'bigotry' label slapped on them so often, we've stopped listening.
