Early mankind created god(s) as an explanation for life, existence and other things that were beyond the knowledge of the time. Having a concept of a (typically) patriarchal figure looking over them also gave their lives and death a sense of purpose, especially if they believed in some sort of afterlife. This was before science came along and threw a spanner in the works explaining the mysteries of nature and undermining these superstitious beliefs.

thank you for these wise words. i enjoyed them!

I didn't know people believed in one without the other.

But that is why I posted, I was wondering if any religion taught the why we are here, instead of just how we should behave since we are here.

Deists can believe one without the other. I'm sure there are others.

Some religions do explain why people are here. That it fulfilled some whim of the gods or to serve as worker slaves for the gods. The latter is from Babylon, which influenced the Jews. What they don't satisfactorily answer is why there is something rather than nothing. They bank on the fact that most people will lose interest in the big questions once their own immediate circumstances are clarified. And that works.

That which does not exist can have no purpose. God had no purpose in creating us because god did not create us.

As far a general purpose of life... all individual.

I don't understand why people try and find a purpose behind the Universe. Purpose is a human invention that seeks to explain why something exists. The Universe, however, was not created by humans so why do we propose it has a purpose.

It was supposed to be an Ikea bookcase, but God misread the instructions and lost the receipt.
