Ignoring the stupidness and trolling the proceeds me in this thread, the recent developments with CIA Director David Petraeus resigning over an extramarital affair seems very oddly timed and I'm not the only one to think so. Petraeus was scheduled to testify in front of congress next week over Benghazi, which he apparently will no longer do.

Petraeus made his own problems. His mistress is being investigated for trying to access his email and she may have seen classified material. No place for a CIA director to be. That's just not something that can be excused in that culture and he knew it and fell on his sword. Sad.

Paula Broadwell, I remember her doing an interview with on the Daily Show or Colbert a while ago. She's an attractive woman and she did seem quite infatuated with General Petraeus, I don't doubt an affair took place. I didn't hear that about Ms. Broadwell trying to access his email and gaining access to classified but that would obviously be unacceptable if true but simply an affair wouldn't warrant a resignation in my opinion. The timing of the resignation/dismissal is suspect however given that he was suppose testify in front of congress a week from now, it does have all the markings of a classic Friday news dump. At the very least it was timed so it would not distract from the presidential election which is understandable but the whole Benghazi things has stunk to high heaven to begin with so nothing would surprise me. If Petraeus refuses to testify in front of congress it will be pretty telling.

Typically, political appointees who are going to be booted out wait until just after the election to announce their departure. The same thing happened after Bush was re-elected.

Petraeus is a Republican whose name has been floated as a political candidate. He would not be the first choice to hide things for a Dem WH. Now he can say whatever story he likes. He's saying he f'd up. Whatever official line he was going to say his deputy will now say. If he hides these Amazing Secrets in private life, he'd hide them in front of Congress too. Making him a private citizen would make him more dangerous for the spin he could openly apply.

The Benghazi thing is election season silly talk. It's been conspiracy mongering from start to finish. It's Vince Foster with arab faces.

And suddenly General Petraeus steps down after an affair with another woman... Now he doesn't have to testify about Benghazi. Quite coincidental, don't you think?

Is Petraeus actually a Republican? His name has been floated out there but that always seemed like wishful thinking from certain members of the GOP. I

Regardless of his resignation that does not excuse him from testifying in front of congress about Benghazi would it?

It seems this affair took place some time ago and they have been holding back on this for quite awhile.

This definitely needs further investigation

Sounds like the consulate in Benghazi was actually a CIA prison that 'interrogated' Libyan militia and other foreign captives. Maybe it wasn't a riot, sounds like it was a jailbreak. Who knows how deep this rabbit hole goes.

Okay, here is the real scoop:

The ambassador et al. were gunned down by Karl Rove operatives, so that Fox News could spend the two months preceding the election fulminating against the president over something.

To the Repugs chagrin: although "Benghazi" does indeed sound like an ominous name for a North African city, most Americans wouldn't be able to find Libya on a map, particularly after the "No Child Left Behind" nonsense, and very few Americans give a hoot what goes down in Libya anyway. The Angry White Men who watch Fox News were going to do as they were told and vote for Romney anyway. The murders ended up being a waste.
