As for it depending on what's in it for who - the matter of leaden gasoline was championed by a scientist on the oil industry's pay roll, while the scientist who refuted him had actually stumbled on his findings accidentally while trying to give the earth an exact date. He had no other motivation than to tell the truth.

What about lead in gasoline?
And while we're on climate change, how come it was so cold last winter? Oh, that's right. They conveniently found new scientific evidence  to justify going from from calling it global warming to calling it climate change. The house of cards is having to re-shuffle the deck.

The point of lead gasoline was, the oil industry had clearly manipulated science to justify their continuation of a dangerous practice.
As for your other point about climate change - I like Misslizard's Batman and Robin explanation the best.

Whether or not the carbon links to catastrophic climate change are true, I think is beside the point. Human industry is making this world an increasingly unpleasant place to live in. Trying to mitigate our pollution by providing economic incentives not to pollute is something that can be a good idea independently of the carbon-climate change link.
