I first read the Dianetics book in the 1960s, and it didn't look too bad back then.

Some years, and a lot of research, later I learned that there had been an occult group working in California - an offshoot from Aleister Crowley's English establishment - with which Hubbard had learned the basics. Then, discerning accurately that things weren't going to get any better, he absconded with the information and wove it into Scientology. Once you've got someone's trust, the last thing you need is to cool them off with too much reality.

If I say anything about what they do to its members, they'll come after me with a huge lawsuit and a license to kill! :|

What can I say, they have a lot of money to back up anything they do illegally.

Scientology is mysteriously successful to me. Despite their claims of being a religion, there is at least one act the church has perpetrated that I believe is incontrovertible evidence that they are corporate: this being their lawsuits against the 'Free Zone' Scientologists. The 'Free Zone' is primarily former members who broke off from the church to practice Scientology without paying hundreds of thousands of dollars, and possibly ditch the space opera (I do not know if this is true or not). The Free Zone, despite the fact that they are practicing these scientifically proven fraudulent methods, deserve that right. There are many non-denomination Christians or whatnot. If Scientology sues the Free Zone for copyright infringement, that implies Scientology and Dianetics are merely a Company and a Product, respectively. The Catholic Church does not sue people who follow Biblical teachings without adhering to their authority; not for hundreds of years have they done this persecution seriously. The Bible, The Koran, whatever, they certainly won't get you sued.

Also, anybody aware of the Narconon project from the Church knows that some of their practices are in fact dangerous to people's health. Narconon is a 'drug rehabilitation program', primarily run by Scientologists and using L. Ron Hubbard's views on drugs. They'll basically feed you vegetable oils and make you sit in saunas for hours to replace and 'steam out' the drugs that are 'stored in fat cells'. There are numerous other methods I cannot recall but this is absolute malarchy. Narconon is just a way for Scientologists to spread their lies to the easily influenced- in this case, those psychologically and physiologically addicted to various drugs, who are in desperate need of real help, and are in a bad position that (in the case of drugs like Amphetamine or Cocaine) is often similiar to Schizophrenic disorders or other forms of psychosis. All this does is make their lives harder.

Another of L. Ron Hubbard's books details his views on radiation as a 'Nuclear physicist' who was involved in the Manhattan project (proven lie). He spouts lots of false information on radiation that could, should one potentially take this book as fact, result in extreme danger. He implies that the 'thetans' within people draw radiation, that human beings have some sort of spiritual/metaphysical resistance to it, which can only be achieved when one is 'All Clear'/Operating Thetan Level 3 (which is after you fork out something like 300 grand). I certainly hope that anybody who works in industry involving radiation and who is an OT 3 does not take this seriously. Death by radiation is a horrible way to go.

Scientology is utter rot. It was made up out of whole cloth by a second rate author of science fiction, partly as a joke. I doubt whether L. Ron Hubbard believed his little prank would catch on as well as it did.

On the subject of people reading sci-fi then calling it their religion, some people actually say that Jedi is their faith.

And if the Jedi Faith works for them, who are we to question it? If it helps you to live a good life, pay your taxes, obey the law ...

Am I wrong to find it just plain childish that someone needs to believe that the force is with him/her in order to be motivated to pay their taxes?

I'd pay my taxes on time if Darth Vader was asking for them.

People "believe" in all sort of nonsense because it gives them a sense of purpose in life or a warm feeling inside. It doesn't mean that the belief system truthfully explains life or the universe.
