in 1989, President Regan issued a challenge to Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin wall.

Why did Regan tell the Soviet president to tear down a German barricade?

Are you unfamiliar with the history of post-war Germany? The East was occupied and dominated by the Soviets.

Shush. One should never pass up the opportunity to point out that Reagan had diminished faculties.

Because a Wall built not to keep people out, but to keep people in is just plain immoral. The ruling clique of East Germany, the so called Peoples Democratic Republic wanted to maintain their country as a prison. In addition they had hundreds of thousands of people working as Stasi operatives meddling into the private lives of East Germans. See the motion picture -Other People's Lives- (in German with English subtitles) to get the picture.

Thats like asking "Why is Kermit the Frog's TV career any of Jim Henson's business?'

Okay- I forget that a whole generation has grown up since the end of the cold war but even so someone shouldve explained to you how there were two germanies and one was a puppet state of the soviet union and that was the germany that built the wall to keep its own people in.

Even members of my own generation didnt understand that world war two resulted in the soviets dominating all of eastern europe.

Reagan was asking the USSR for help against robo-Hitler's Nazi regime. The wall was a gate to hell, where the Nazis were residing. The USSR was obligated to help Reagan due to a blood pact between FDR and Joseph Stalin. That's why Reagan demanded Gorbachev tear down the wall, honor the blood pact between the US and the USSR, and defeat the Nazis again.

I think Reagan was drunk listening to Pink Floyd's 'tear down the wall' and drunk-dialed Gorbachev as a joke.

My opinion [and Number 1 Son's, though his take is more nuanced with hypotheses on the causal factors] is that The Wall, though it has some strengths, is a step down.

Still a nice conceit.
