I belive in two of your options, but to back the one I chose, here is a quote from a British minister, Dennis Healey.

“World events do not occur by accident. They are made to happen, whether it is to do with national issues or commerce; most of them are staged and managed by those who hold the purse string.”

And the less evidence there is for a behind the scenes conspiracy, the more you believe there is a behind the scenes conspiracy. When it comes to conspiracies, no evidence is a lot of evidence. And so it goes...

I have a simpler view: sh*t happens.

Repetition of the same cyclical mistakes, just in different forms as technology permits.

Things happen because of an often obscure build up of interconnected events that will then later be picked apart and assigned greater or less value depending upon the preference in academia at the time

Jakob, why do you have your avatar as Salman Rushdie looking cyanotic?

history is a kernel of truth wrapped in an interpretation of BS.

An interesting probe.

Generally do not do polls per se.

I am reminded of one multiple choice quiz - teacher said it would not count on grade, so I marked on a patter, a a b c b a a b c b or such. Mine was the best quiz turned in. Why I did not DO multiple choice as teacher.

My response would likely be closest to that from Natty Boh - but of course human actions, reactions, interactions are very complex balances of an unguessable inventory of factors.

Go to Las Vegas, put your shirt on the nose of a horse [Yucch!], but do not predict people save in the utmost generality - like ruveyn.

That said, it is also noteworthy that some answer for the path of history and some - see ryan93 - for historiography.

The latter would never have occurred to me.

Multiple choice questions are a terrible judge of level of knowledge; I got an A1 on my Christmas biology, my friend, who never attended once, got a B1.

The historiography element I feel is the most important element, really the only element worth arguing about. If the methodology of study is flawed, then the field is flawed. And while I won't deny that empirical observation means that the facts will generally be accurate, the theories connecting these facts often involve a large degree of subjectivism, and I have no time for opinion.

A global cabal of paranoids are out to rule the world.

And theyre all out to get ME!
