Quote:
The French presidential election appears to be headed to a runoff.

Exit polls cited by French television in Sunday's first round of voting show President Nicolas Sarkozy losing by a thin margin to Socialist challenger François Hollande. According to CNN, Sarkozy captured 25.5 percent of the vote, while Hollande took 28.4 percent.

Marine Le Pen, an extreme conservative, came in third with about 20 percent, exit polls showed. Jean-Luc Melenchon, a liberal, was in fourth with 11.7 percent; Francois Bayrou finished fifth.

If no candidate wins an absolute majority, French law requires a runoff between the top two candidates.

The runoff is scheduled for May 6.

I would vote for François Hollande. The world has suffered enough from conservatism, and there is no point in continuing to elect conservatives, anywhere in the world.

I'd prefer Hollande, although I feel that most Socialist International members have lost their way since the '80s. But he'd be better than Sarkozy. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that Sarkozy will win.

Sarkozy because if Hollande is elected the French will be paying a lot more in interest on a debt that constitutes 90% of their GNP, when you owe a ton of money to the finance industry, its generally not a good idea to run on being an enemy of finance. Furthermore, since Hollande has said that he wants to enact policies contrary to those agreed to by the heads of state within the EU and review already signed agreements, he will create a lot of market turmoil.

Now, some of you may say that this is not a huge issue, however what ultimately created a crisis in Spain, Italy and Greece was that the faith in the politicians and the government's ability to pay their outstanding debt resulted in much higher interest payments being required to borrow money, which in the end created an unsustainable economic policy.

On the other hand, this is going to be the first time where a country may immediately suffer the consequences of electing the "wrong" person, since rates started going up about 2 weeks ago and last I checked are still rising.

None of them.

If forced to choose at gunpoint: Sarkozy. Although Le Pen is attractive, it's a seductive poison.

Actually, it doesn't matter who gets elected, because they apparently can't tell precisely how they will reduce the debt. Sarko is an idiot who favors his friends in the corporate world and thinks be all "bling-bling" is enough to get the job done. -.-

If anything, Mélanchon had some good ideas, notably, outlawing the copyrighting / patent of the living. As long as they're against corruption, they're ok in my book, kind of. Le Pen might've been good for that, since she doesn't have a hand in any of the current parties's plots (heck, they all tried to keep her away from the election by denying her the famed 500 signatures required to represent yourself as a candidate).

Most of the other candidates would've been slightly acceptable, since they denounce the bank fiasco and have...well..."interesting" solutions. If anything, the centre would've been nice, but meh.

So far, Hollande is passing Sarkozy by a few points for the first turn... So we'll be seeing a second turn between those two. And since everyone pretty much hates Sarko and wants to see him gone, they're telling their voters to vote for Hollande. =/

(Oh and, here's a fun little game I've found called the Sarkothon, where you incarn a crudely drawn Sarkozy that has to gather money (But careful, accepting too much money can make you drop in the polls! :P ) and rise in the polls by giving headbutts to immigrants, hippies, and other people (Except those on the ground) and yes it's in french, just click once to jump and twice to headbutt : http://www.zanorg.com/prod/sarkothon/ )

That's because by the end of the '80s people realized how badly that all the different flavors of Marxism suck!

Socialist International hasn't been Marxist since long before the '80s. It was Fabian socialist.

It will be interesting at seeing at how Hollande will effect the debt crisis in Europe and the survival of the Euro as it will surely have an effect across the Atlantic, I'm not sure Sarkozy will handle that much better however. I know little of Marine Le Pen, I know when she visited America she literally stalked Ron Paul to get a chance to meet him for whatever reason. I sincerely doubt she embraces Paul's economic viewpoints or his views on individual liberty. Ethnic nationalism has an ugly past in Europe and not something I would want to be associated with.
